Full Job Description

Northumberland County Council are looking to recruit an Engineering Assistant to join their busy Street Lighting Team. Street Lighting is a highly visible and vital part of Northumberland's highway network. Lighting is provided to enable the safe use of the highway for road users and pedestrians and the role of the Street Lighting Engineering Assistant is key to ensuring reported faults and emergencies are dealt with promptly and efficiently. The street lighting team receives approximately 5,000 enquiries per year all of which need to be managed in a timely and professional manner. The Engineering Assistant is a full-time role which is graded at Band 4, with hybrid working offered, between home and the Council's Cowley Road Depot, Blyth. The post holder will need to be confident in dealing with members of the public, Parish and District Councils, Local and County Councillors and will need to use their initiative in deciding when to keep customers informed of the progress of their enquiry. The role also requires the constant and comprehensive update of the Street Lighting Mayrise System, which includes customer requests, works orders and inventory updates. The post holder will be given full training in using and interrogating the Street Lighting Mayrise System, which is also used to calculate the energy consumption of the Street Lighting Assets. The role of the Engineering Assistant will provide support right across the business, including the Maintenance & Design Engineers as well as the Operations Manager. The role also requires a close working relationship with our key internal and external partners, which includes Northern Powergrid and Scottish Power Systems. The role is a key part of the process for applying for utility maps to assist with the planned replacement of assets.

We would like to hear from people who have a sound knowledge of all Microsoft office applications and have a high level of computer literacy, and existing knowledge of the Council's Oracle EBusiness system, such as projects, procurement and receivables, would be an advantage. [AJ1] You should also have good interpersonal and organisational skills and have a strong customer focus. It is essential that you can prioritise and organise your own workload as well as being able to work well within a team environment, work to tight deadlines, be methodical in your approach and operate with minimum supervision, as the team operates in a highly reactive work environment. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification, and although not essential, it would be advantageous if the post holder held a Current Full Driving Licence. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate that they have the right to work in the UK.
