Full Job Description

The Insight and Evaluation Team, based within Student Journey, is a newly formed team responsible for providing expertise in the evaluation of initiatives to widen access to higher education and address inequalities in student success, deliver a range of market insight work to support academic portfolio development and advise on student recruitment strategy. This new role will manage the growing team, ensuring it supports data-led decision making across the university and cultivating a culture of high quality evaluation.

What will you be doing?

-Manage a team of insight and evaluation specialists. You'll provide excellent day-to-day management of staff at different stages in their careers, investing in the development of their skills and empowering personal development.

-Lead on evaluation of widening participation and student success activity. Together with your team, you'll support colleagues working across the institution to rigorously evaluate activity that forms part of the University's new Access and Participation Plan. You'll be a champion for the benefits of evaluation and drive forward both internal and external publication of impact reporting, supporting the University's commitments to contribute to the national evidence base.

-Support the development of the University's student recruitment strategy. You and your team will establish yourself as experts on the recruitment of undergraduate and postgraduate students, helping the university not just to meet its intake targets but also to continue diversifying its student body.

-Turn data into insight. You'll lead on the development of curated narrative insight in the form of briefing packs, presentations and reports that shows senior decision makers the most important trends at the most relevant points. Rather than reporting data for data's sake, you'll use your expertise to harness the power of the University's data to answer key questions quickly and accessibly.

-Develop excellent technical skills for working with data. The team's insight work is primarily produced using SQL and Python and version controlled using Git. You'll establish a culture of investment in technical skills (both your own and your team's) and harness innovative technical solutions to increase the pace and quality of outputted work.

  • You have a strong understanding of either student recruitment/admissions in higher education or evaluating access and participation plan countable activity

  • You have a good grasp of the data landscape when working with national demographics and social inequalities

  • You're highly numerate with a good understanding of statistics

  • You have experience of working with programming or query languages such as Python, R, SQL or have a proven ability to pick up new technical skills quickly

  • You're able to present complex, technical information to senior audiences to support decision-making under pressure

  • You have experience of line management
