Full Job Description

We are looking to recruit enthusiastic individuals to join the Faculty of Engineering to provide bespoke academic and pastoral support to students from International Foundation Programmes during their first year of undergraduate study as additional support alongside personal tutoring, which will help students to get the most of their studies to improve students' progression to better students experience.

You will lead the delivery of small group tutorial sessions focusing on study skills provision, general student support, and sign posting students to relevant academic colleagues when specialist knowledge is required. Professional knowledge of science/engineering topics is not required; however, some core knowledge base of science and/or engineering will be beneficial.

What will you be doing?

You will be working under the direction of the academic leads and alongside the Engineering Faculty Education Team. The role holder will provide group tutorial sessions and support students' progression with consideration of curricula and pedagogical approach. Furthermore, you will review student cases and disseminate effective educational approaches to help inspiring students to become autonomous learners and foster their individual needs;

  • Leading on analysing students' performance, reporting and documentation of educational needs so that to make recommendations on pedagogic approach and act on that to implement effective practical support for individual student.

  • Acting as the pastoral expert in effective approaches/recommendations to make informed decisions with regards to learning and teaching.

  • Managing own time to ensure objectives and targets are met, where appropriate, planning, organising and prioritising key activities for supporting students' progression.

  • Working independently on decision making to queries and using one's own judgement and initiative to deal with unforeseen problems or extenuating circumstances, where necessary, referring to senior members of the team for advice.

  • Solving problems and suggesting solutions to a range of barriers students could be facing and reviewing feedback to anticipate potential complications.

    You have proven records of working with students/tutees/mentees with diverse backgrounds, where you provided bespoke academic support and pastoral care.

  • You have experience of designing and delivering group tutorial sessions with outstanding presentation skills.

  • You can work in a busy and demanding environment, under pressure at times; to produce accurate work to deadlines with attention to detail.

  • You have good written and verbal communication skills; good interpersonal skills; sensitivity to others' points of view; ability to work well as a team member.

  • You have knowledge of pedagogy including flip learning and blended learning, ideally in higher or further educational setting, but not essential.
