Full Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team, operating in the dynamic world of Information Security at the University of Bristol. Working within the sub-section that is Cyber Security, the role holder will be responsible for developing, maintaining and supporting our Cyber Security Toolsets.

What will you be doing?

Under the supervision of the Head of Digital Security, the Cyber Security Tooling Specialist will assist with the development, maintenance and support of our cyber security toolset. This varied application stack may include a Splunk SIEM (Security Incident and Event Monitoring), Microsoft Defender EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response), XDR (Extended Detection and Response), IDS/IPS (Intrusion Detection Systems/ Intrusion Prevention Systems), and networking elements, such as Firewalls and NAC (Network Access Control).

A large part of the role will be spent liaising with external stakeholders, such as vendors, suppliers and external Managed Security Service Partners (MSSPs) alongside internal colleagues within the Information Security team and the wider department.

Your responsibilities will extend to identifying, analysing, and implementing proactive measures to help fine tune the existing security platforms, in a bid to mitigate future threats. Furthermore, you will provide guidance and assistance to various stakeholders within the University, ensuring proper administration of security tools and recommended guidelines, and providing baselines based on your own research and vendor recommendations.

The role holder will ensure the use of tooling and best practices to manage development in a controlled environment, including automation where appropriate. It is critical that accurate documentation, standard operating procedures and service support documentation are followed and maintained.

You should apply if

You have a strong knowledge of cybersecurity concepts, tools and techniques and experience of supporting such services in a similarly large and complex environment.

You can work collaboratively across an organisation and be able to build working relationships with stakeholders of all levels, including vendors, suppliers and external Managed Security Service Partners (MSSPs).

You are passionate about security, seeking out opportunities to improve and strengthen our security measures beyond standard practices.

This post requires the role holder to satisfactory pass Baseline Personnel Security Screening (BPSS) prior to starting in the position.
