Full Job Description

The University of Bristol IT Services Division is embarking on an exciting period of change to deliver a world class IT Department. We are seeking to recruit an experienced Application Support Engineer to provide support for, and improvements to, a range of HR and Finance applications. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a team delivering solutions to support the University's strategy. The successful applicant will help support business critical applications such as our ERP system to meet SLAs. This involves working closely with other teams in IT/Projects, the business, and 3rd party suppliers., You will work in a technical service management capacity alongside two team members delivering technical support to enterprise critical applications, in particular the ERP System (Agresso/Business World). The day-to-day activities include incident management, solving complex technical problems, and service improvement. The role also involves planning, delivering upgrades, writing technical documentation, and ensuring data integrations function as required. There will be opportunities to work on projects to implement new services, and internally driven CI initiatives.

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in providing technical support to business critical enterprise applications.
  • Desire for stability and reliability: You value creating stable, reliable systems, and you have knowledge of automated monitoring, alerting and reporting. Ensuring uptime and performance of the team's services is a key aspect of the role.
  • The ability to provide solutions, or workarounds to complex technical problems often under pressure, and the willingness to work out of hours to ensure major incidents are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Excellent communication skills are required to work with the business, other IT teams, and 3rd party suppliers.
  • Experience in Oracle or SQL Server databases; and an in-depth knowledge of SQL is required to understand data models and diagnose problems with reports, and performance issues.
  • The ability to interpret code in a language such as Java, or .NET.
  • A broad technical knowledge of networking, databases, and IT security.
  • Experience of Windows Power Shell scripting or UNIX scripting to automate processes.
  • Experience of providing technical support to Finance/HR applications is desirable.
