Full Job Description

An opportunity has arisen to join the Hammersmith Hospital Cardiac Team as Bank Cardiac Surgical Care Practitioner. Working alongside the Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Junior Medical Doctors, and the Theatre MDT, the Bank Cardiac Surgical Care Practitioner will carry out operative procedures whilst assisting with all aspects of pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care. The post-holder will be expected to perform these duties with a high degree of clinical knowledge. As Bank Cardiac SCP, working on the bank is on an ad hoc basis to fill service needs and your availability. The Bank Cardiac SCP will be expected to provide skilled and consistent assistance in all aspects of elective and emergency adult cardiac and thoracic surgery at Hammersmith Hospital. The post holder will demonstrate extensive expertise in both conventional and endoscopic conduit harvesting.Main duties of the job The post-holder will be required to participate in / carry out operative procedures including:

  • Harvesting of the long Saphenous vein
  • Harvesting of the short Saphenous vein
  • Harvesting of the Radial artery
  • The relevant closure techniques
  • Different techniques of Haemostasis in Surgical wounds to include insertion of drains where relevant, use of diathermy, identifying excessive bleeding, re-exploration for bleeding
  • Opening techniques for sternotomy including use of the sternotomy saw, complications of opening, emergency opening
  • Closure techniques for sternotomy including insertion of drains, closure of relevant tissues, complications
  • The opening and closure techniques for thoracotomy
  • Acting as first and second assistant to the Consultant Surgeon for all cardiac and thoracic cases; to understand and anticipate their needs in all circumstances
