Job Description: Sustainability Consultant - Sellafield/Blencathra House (please note - regular travel to Blencathra House/Sellafield is a pre-requisite for the role)

You will be advising clients on ISO standards and management systems, sustainability initiatives, environmental strategies, training, and net zero to support their sustainability objectives.

The successful candidate will be adaptable and flexible, with a capability to simplify complex sustainable concepts into easy-to-understand messages and stories.

What will you do day to day?

The Sustainability Consultant will report to the Embedded team, while working closely with all members of the Plan Zero Consulting team and other relevant teams, as required by individual projects. You will be expected to deliver billable consultancy services to new and existing customers as required by specific engagements.

For this role, we are seeking a candidate who can travel easily and regularly to Cumbria for multiple day visits.

Typical advice you would be providing our clients includes:

  • Coordinating multiple programmes to help clients achieve their sustainability objectives and KPIs.

  • Leading Mitie-led projects to build and maintain Management Systems, objectives programme, audits and create positive outcomes.

  • Supporting the structuring and preparation of client proposals on embedded and other plan zero services

  • Advising clients on sustainability initiatives and programmes.

  • Managing and mentoring junior consultants and analysts within project delivery teams to aid their personal and professional development.

  • Reviewing work and outputs from more junior team members.

  • Structuring and reviewing data models to assess customer databases on carbon, waste, compliance, and reporting.

  • Identifying solutions to reduce their environmental risks, carbon emissions and pollutants from across Plan Zero.

  • Building close and trusted relationships with clients, adapting to their culture and values.

  • Producing impactful reports with findings and recommendations.

  • Educating customers on climate change, environmental compliance and decarbonisation through client presentations and workshops.

  • Keeping up to date with the latest innleaovations, developments, and changes.

  • Who will you work with?

    The Plan Zero Consulting team is part of Mitie's Plan Zero team, the company's business unit responsible for driving the sustainability and decarbonisation agendas of our customers. The role will play a pivotal role in supporting clients to accelerate their net zero journey through provision of strategic and advisory support across all relevant areas, including the built environment, energy procurement, transport, waste, and biodiversity.

    You will work closely with account and business development teams, ensuring early access to client conversations and early identification of client issues and challenges.

    As part of this role, you can expect regular engagement with:
  • Analysts, Consultants, Managers and Partners to discuss project delivery with a focus on achieving the exceptional

  • Site-based Mitie personnel, responsible for delivering FM services.

  • Mitie Decarbonisation Engineers and Energy Managers for support on building audits and with the technical considerations relating to the initiatives being developed

  • Mitie existing customers to discuss and deliver decarbonisation opportunities

  • Internal stakeholders including Account Managers, Technical Managers, and Operations teams to educate on the energy transition and sustainability trends and our role within this space

    Desirable to have work experience or volunteering in a relevant field, such as ESG, Environmental Management or Sustainability., Experience of working with clients and building trusted long-term relationships both with customers and internal stakeholders

  • Clear understanding of decarbonisation challenge and implications for private and public companies

  • Understanding of sustainability frameworks, such as ISO Standards and the GHG Protocol.

  • Working knowledge of decarbonisation technologies including Energy Efficiency measures, Solar PV, Heat Pumps, EV Charging Infrastructure

  • Understanding of embodied carbon, and calculation methodologies is preferable

  • Lead Auditor qualification in either ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 or 14001 is ideal but not required.

  • Good commercial acumen and understanding of producing project budgets and delivering against them

  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to communicate with stakeholders eloquently and professionally at all levels

  • Experience delegating work to nominated individuals.

  • Ability to review and assess large volumes of technical data and distil the key strategic insights

  • Ability to work within teams and with multiple stakeholders

  • Evidence of strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities

  • Proven self-starter and capable of working unsupervised

  • Excellent IT skills in particularly sound knowledge of Microsoft Windows (Word, Excel, Power Point, Power BI)
