Full Job Description

An exciting role has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join Sussex Community's nationally-recognised sustainability team, supporting our Care Without Carbon (CWC) programme within the Trust and the wider region. This role is for 3 days per week but we could also consider a 2 day per week role, spread over 4 half days.

Based at Brighton General Hospital, the job involves supporting the Communications Manager for Care Without Carbon in developing and delivering multifaceted sustainability engagement campaigns at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) and other partner NHS organisations in the region. The role demands excellent writing skills as there is a lot of content creation for the website as well as Trust channels.

The post-holder will play a key role supporting Care Without Carbon's sustainability engagement programmes and associated wellbeing/sustainable behaviour change offering both internally and for other trusts.
1. Day-to-day management of multifaceted sustainability engagement campaigns and programmes at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust and other partner NHS organisations.
2. Day-to-day planning and management of engagement programme in line with an annual comms strategy and editorial planner.
3. Supporting delivery against the 'Culture' and 'Wellbeing' workstreams of the Care Without Carbon programme at SCFT and partner trusts.
4. Reporting on the impact of engagement work, including supporting the development and delivery of metrics to report on complex sustainability benefits and producing associated visuals;
5. Supporting the rollout of a new staff engagement programme to engage staff and our community with Care Without Carbon.
6. Attending events and being an ambassador for Care Without Carbon, SCFT and our partner organisations.
7. Working with other NHS organisations to develop staff engagement campaigns based on Care Without Carbon.
8. Support delivery of the CWC Envoy programme at SCFT and partner trusts.
9. Promoting Care Without Carbon outside of the Trust, and building links with other NHS organisations alongside external organisations.
10. Support and maintain the wider engagement of stakeholders within SCFT including clinical staff, CWC Envoys and patients as well as those from partner NHS organisations and the wider community.

  • General
  • Supporting delivery and management of Care Without Carbon communications activity, covering information from a range of specialist subject areas and across different platforms for SCFT and partner NHS organisations.

  • Creative input into roll out of new staff engagement programme and ongoing input into campaigns.

  • Supporting the Communications Manager with the annual development of a communications plan and editorial calendar in line with CWC programme milestones, other internal programmes and external sustainability campaigns.

  • Daily monitoring of social media and CWC website, providing updates and general management to ensure a consistent presence for the brand and regular content.

  • Copywriting and editorial support for wider Environment & Sustainability Team.

  • Supporting the delivery of projects/actions associated with the 'Culture' and 'Wellbeing' work streams of CWC as necessary.

  • Assisting with other areas of work within the CWC team, as required.

  • On site attendance for events and face to face engagement opportunities, this can include attending the sites of our partner Trusts across the region.


  • Programme collateral
  • Creating written or visual of communications materials for SCFT and other trusts for internal or external use as appropriate to support delivery of the engagement programme and other engagement activities. This would include distilling complex information from different subject areas into language that would be understandable to a range of stakeholders. Content might include work on internal trust communications, the Care Without Carbon (CWC) blog, CWC website, posters, presentations, toolkits, newsletters and social media.

  • Day to day management of our online presence including ensuring content for the CWC website, trust intranet and trust internet sites contain up to date and relevant information relating to the CWC programme. This includes weekly creation of web content and promotion of content as required, as well as monitoring for and reporting faults and monitoring progress through to resolution.

  • Liaise with designers/suppliers as appropriate on the development and delivery of communications materials, including the creation of briefs to obtain quotes for the work, and managing delivery against them.

  • Assisting with quarterly production of an e-based newsletter for several trusts in the programme.

  • Development of webinar content, including researching suitable subject matter and potential guest speakers.

  • Management of campaign elements such as prize draws, goodie bags, and competitions, including sourcing freebies and support from local sustainability-focussed businesses.

  • Producing ad hoc materials and amending existing collateral using Adobe Indesign program.


  • Events, workshops, stakeholder engagement and training
  • Planning, managing and facilitating sometimes complex CWC events for the programme. This might include online and face-to-face events as appropriate. E.g. annual launch of Challenges, NHS Sustainability Day events, events linking into national and international events linked to sustainability.

  • Attending internal and external events as an ambassador for the CWC programme, including staff induction, trust events and conferences.

  • Engage with staff at all levels of the organisation as required including site visits and managing relationship with key stakeholders such as facilities staff, our CWC Envoys and frontline clinical staff. This will include communicating sometimes complex information in different ways to suit different stakeholders.

  • Developing and delivering training through workshops and other mechanisms as required. This would be primarily for CWC Envoys (champions), but also for other clinical and non-clinical staff groups in line with our new engagement programme.

  • Providing guidance and supervision for tasks being undertaken by the Estates Admin team in support of the engagement programme e.g. sending out posters to facilities leads at Trust sites etc.


  • Measurement and reporting
  • Monthly monitoring of engagement programme KPIs.

  • Supporting the periodic review of the engagement programme, as part of a programme of continuous improvement, and ensuring we remain at the forefront of sustainability engagement in the NHS. This might include gathering feedback from key internal and external stakeholders as well as desktop research into relevant external initiatives.

  • Assisting the Communications Manager in the planning and creation of the Annual Sustainability Progress Report.

  • Supporting the development of key metrics to measure the sustainability impact of our staff engagement programmes.

  • Production of graphics and visuals to support reporting of the CWC programme, projects and initiatives, enabling us to communicate complex information in a clear and visually interesting way. This will include use of graphic design software packages including InDesign.


  • Finance
  • Responsible for purchases of goods and services linked to staff engagement programme including CWC merchandise, printed collateral, banners etc, and maintaining levels of these items at the required levels.

  • Contributing to the development of departmental budgets associated with our engagement work within SCFT, and across our partner trusts and the wider NHS system.

  • Responsible for delivery against agreed consultancy budgets for external costs including printed materials, graphic design etc.
