Full Job Description

As a sustainability Manager, you will play a critical role in the delivery and communication of Pets' sustainability strategy. Your primary responsibilities will lie in the day-to-day management of our sustainability programmes, developing relevant sustainability policies, leading our communications and engagement strategy in and outside the business, and supporting our sustainability reporting. Your role will be critical in keeping our sustainability programmes on track, helping them have the impact we intend them to, maximising the sustainability communications and engagement opportunities, ensuring our policies our up to date and relevant and where required support across other sustainability initiatives. As part of the core sustainability team, you will also have the opportunity to gain experience across all sustainability areas working with experts in their fields. We work as one team and there will be lots of opportunity to develop in broader areas. About your responsibilities

  • Day-to-day responsibility for programme management of sustainability projects from initiation to completion. This will include reporting of status and progress
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal teams and external service providers and partners to support sustainability initiatives
  • Support and lead some of the development of sustainability policies, procedures, guidance, and training material.
  • Provide direction to internal product and technology teams to influence systems, product designs and services
  • Develop processes to integrate compliance and sustainability objectives into new product development
  • Deliver the internal and external communication and engagement strategy for sustainability
  • Coordinate the supplier communication strategy together with Sourcing and Compliance teams
  • Deal with colleague queries in a timely manner on sustainability
  • Provide sustainability expertise and training as required to relevant internal teams (e.g., communications, facilities, trading, procurement, marketing, veterinary), whilst supporting colleagues to understand their role in meeting our business objectives.
  • Develop and maintain sustainability assets for onboarding new colleagues across the business
  • Network through industry and keep up to date with regulatory obligations, current trends and best practices in areas of responsibility and broader involvement.

    A passion for and understanding of sustainability issues impacting business and society.
  • An individual who is motivated by the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the company's sustainability strategy and brings subject matter expertise (e.g. in nature or raw materials)
  • Comfortable working cross functionally in a matrix environment with expert colleagues in other areas (e.g. environmental specialist, responsible sourcing specialist, environmental leads, energy manager, communications, marketing).
  • Project Management: Previous experience of managing multiple sustainability projects and sustainability data (e.g. carbon data, energy, and waste)
  • Previous experience and expertise in sustainability policy creation and experience in product management
  • Engagement: Partner with the communications team to lead and implement creative and impactful internal and external engagement programmes. This will include responsibility for our Planet Champions community and social content (internal and external)
  • Consumer Awareness: Partner with the marketing team to develop customer-facing communications, and align with sector-wide initiatives through organisations such as BRC
  • Data Analytics: Able to work with data and manage information, create reports, and present information in a clear and engaging way
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience
  • Attitude: A positive 'can do' attitude and comfortable being a self-starter.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: A desire to work within a growing team who are working across functions in a leading retail and veterinary business.
  • Communication: A skilled communicator who is experienced at adapting styles to build effective working relationships with stakeholders across functions and externally
  • Highly organised with an analytical mind and great reporting skills
  • Experience in environmental sustainability including nature and biodiversity, raw materials, reporting, circularity, understanding of carbon mapping and carbon reduction strategies.
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Office.
  • Desirable, but not essential:
  • Retail, veterinary or B2B supplier experience (food, non-food, or services) preferred but not essential
  • Experience with PowerBI is advantageous but isn't essential
  • Knowledge of relevant sustainability requirements for Plc corporates
  • Relevant degree and/or professional membership desirable (e.g. IEMA) but not essential as experience and personal characteristics will be given equal consideration
