Full Job Description

The Geography Department is a very friendly and collaborative team and one which prides itself on building strong relationships with the pupils. There are currently eight members of staff teaching within the Geography Department and in part, due to the success and popularity of the subject, a vacancy has arisen for a new permanent member of staff to join the team from January or April 2025. Applications for full time or part time (0.8) will be considered.

The department has consistently been extremely popular and it continues to be a leading option choice for students at GCSE and A-Level. There are currently over 200 students taking Geography at GCSE and over 60 have opted to study the subject at A-Level. The department achieves very good exam results at all levels and works well with students of all abilities, including Oxbridge applicants.

In Years 7-9 all boys and girls study Geography and follow a broadly based curriculum which mostly reflects the National Curriculum. In Years 10 and 11 (having started in year 9), the students opting for Geography follow the AQA syllabus. The AQA syllabus is also followed for the A-Level programme of study. Most year groups have some fieldwork experience. Years 7, 8 and 9 currently undertake fieldwork in the large school grounds which include a suitable river, woodland and grassland. There are also some day visits linked to Geography such as an extension programme visit to Wisley. GCSE students carry out a number of pieces of fieldwork, including coastal fieldwork at Seaford in the summer term and then an Urban study in Kingston when they are in Year 11. In recent years, international trips have been run to the Azores, Iceland and Sicily for the GCSE cohort. The Lower Sixth go on 2 separate day trips (to the south coast and London) in preparation for their coursework and a biannual trip to
Iceland in October half term (mostly recently in 2022). They are exposed to a variety of fieldwork examples throughout the course to help them make independent decisions about the fieldwork they want to write investigate.

The department is very well resourced and located within a stylish and purpose built Humanities block, linked to the Sixth Form Centre. There are four Geography classrooms and staff occupy their own large office.

Applicants should be prepared to teach across the age range (11-18) and some knowledge of both the GCSE and A-level AQA courses will be an advantage. There is an expectation that applicants will have good ICT skills and will wish to incorporate ICT into their teaching. An enthusiasm to contribute to the department in helping with clubs and trips would be expected.

Single staff accommodation may be available on-site.
