Full Job Description

Haberdashers' Adams is a selective state grammar school with academy status situated in the small market town of Newport in rural Shropshire. It is a newly co-educational school from September 2024, taking approximately 30 girls into year 7. There are five forms of entry and currently about 1050 pupils on roll; approximately 100 of these are boarders. The Sixth Form has about 370 students of whom about 120 are girls.

The Mathematics Department

Maths is currently taught by eight maths teachers who are based in a well-equipped new teaching block which opened in June 2021. A computer room and class sets of laptop computers are also available and can be booked for whole class sessions.

There is no setting in Years 7 and 8 and some modest setting in Years 9-11. All students take the Higher Tier Linear GCSE (Pearson) at the end of Year 11. In the Sixth Form, maths is the most popular subject: we now have around two thirds of the Sixth Form studying A-level or AS-level maths or further maths. There are typically six A-level maths sets, one AS-level maths set, two AS-level further maths sets, and one A-level further maths set.

Extra-curricular activities are a very important part of life at this school. The maths department has an open-door policy for students and actively encourages them to seek help outside of normal lessons be it with their class teachers or via peer-mentoring during break, lunchtimes or after-school. We enter all pupils for the Junior Mathematics Challenge in Year 7, the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge in Year 9, and the Senior Mathematics Challenge in Year 13.

The further mathematicians also enter the Senior Mathematics Challenge in Year 12. We also enter a selected number of girls for the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls. It is not unusual for students to qualify for the follow-on rounds of these competitions. We enter a team of Year 8 and 9 students into the national Team Mathematics competition. We also enter the Y10 Team Maths Challenge and the Senior Team Mathematics competition.

We help to arrange trips for mathematicians, such as residential courses for the sixth form at Manchester University or to Maths Inspiration Lectures. We run STEP classes for the more able Sixth Form mathematicians, a bridge club, House Mathematics, House Chess and House Bridge.

We hope the successful candidate would look forward to taking an active part in one or more maths-related extra-curricular activities.

Although this is a selective school, we do have a wide range of abilities in mathematics - our best pupils are in the top 1-2% nationally, while the weakest work hard and need a great deal of support to obtain a GCSE grade 5 or 6. Differentiation and a variety of teaching approaches including the appropriate use of ICT are therefore important issues for us. Most importantly, we want pupils to enjoy, feel appropriately challenged by and look forward to their experiences in the maths classroom.

The Candidate

The department is looking to recruit a teacher who can teach mathematics to pupils from Year 7 through to the Lower Sixth. We also wish to appoint someone who is interesting in being involved in the wide range of extra-curricular activities that are an important part of the life of this school.
