The vacancy

We seek to recruit a well-qualified and enthusiastic Full Time Teacher of Religion, Philosophy and Ethics from January 2025 to build on the excellent foundations currently present in the School. The applicant should be a suitably qualified, enthusiastic and inspirational teacher with the ability to work in a team. They will be passionate about the subject, and demonstrate flair whilst maintaining the very highest of standards. An ability to create and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children is essential.

Philosophy at Channing

The School delivers the AQA A Level Philosophy course (7172). All students have previously studied both RE and Philosophy at Year 7, following an adapted version of the P4C (Philosophy for Children) curriculum. Pupils begin to understand persuasive reasoning, construct basic arguments by considering structure and argument elements and develop flexible thinking/problem-solving. Pupils move on to write their own fables around principles and morals, examine assumptions in reasoning, gather evidence to form judgements, consider credibility and construct complex arguments. Later in the year, we enter the Community of Enquiry and introduce the fundamentals of Philosophy: questioning and listening skills, analysing stimulus material and developing arguments. This is informed by the examination of famous philosophical theories.

Building on this work in Year 7, students study Religious Education in Years 8-9 and many continue with the OCR course as the GCSE option in Years 10 and 11, consistently attaining outstanding results.

This means that students embarking on the Philosophy course have honed their communication, evaluative and analytical skills over a number of years setting them in good stead to engage with and be highly successful in this fascinating area of study. A number of students each year proceed to Philosophy and theology courses at university, including at Oxbridge.

Job Description - Teacher of Philosophy

Teachers of Philosophy are expected to:

• Plan lessons of suitable intellectual challenge and effective differentiation within the classroom, including provision for the most able students and those with special educational needs.


• Develop and sustain good working relationships with pupils, colleagues and parents.


• Keep regular records of pupil progress and fulfil the requirements of the school's arrangements for reporting to parents.


• Take a full part in the department's programme of outings and activities.


• Keep up-to-date with national developments in Philosophy, teaching and learning, and have an active interest in individual professional development.


• Plan for the effective use of ICT in the Department.


• Have a working knowledge of Safeguarding issues in the workplace.


• Work closely with form tutors/Heads of Section.


• Attend INSET, departmental and staff meetings.


• Attend Parent Evenings, Open Days and the annual Founders' Day, usually the first Saturday in July.
