Full Job Description
Exciting teaching opportunity in Large Animal Clinical Skills at The Royal Veterinary College We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Pathobiology and Population Sciences (PPS) for a Teaching Fellow in Large Animal Clinical Skills. Competence in animal management, handling and the development of key clinical farm skills underpins our ability to produce capable veterinary graduates. For this reason, we are looking to recruit a teaching fellow to contribute to our large animal pre-clinical and clinical skills teaching. The successful applicant will form a key component of the team that is responsible for the practical teaching and assessment of veterinary students across all five years of our BVetMed Veterinary degree and associated courses and will work closely with other staff in the Farm Animal Health and Production Group. A primary focus of this role will be to oversee the development and management of our new Large Animal Handling Facility (LAHF) which is situated at the RVC Boltons Park Farm. This valuable addition to our facilities is currently under construction and due to be finished in May 2025. The building will consist of 'wet lab' teaching facilities, classrooms, a student common room, staff office and a modular open barn area for large live animal teaching. We have a number of interactive models for teaching clinical skills and will need to further populate the building with key clinical skills training stations. Our aim is to appoint the Teaching Fellow in Large Animal Clinical Skills prior to completion of the new facility to enable the successful candidate to play a key part in the final setup and development of the building and play an integral role in the function of the facility. Liaising closely with the farm staff and teaching colleagues, this role will primarily focus on the organisation and teaching of clinical skills across all farm species. While the position is predominantly farm animal based, the ideal candidate should also be comfortable handling horses occasionally., The RVC values Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and therefore welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities. Balancing both the needs of the business with those of our staff, we will consider applications to work on a flexible basis. The successful applicant will be involved in a range of practical farm animal teaching across multiple settings. We are looking to recruit a veterinary surgeon (MRCVS or eligible for MRCVS) with a desire to teach clinical farm skills and contribute to the development of the next generation of production animal veterinarians. Previous teaching and assessment experience within a clinical setting would be an advantage. The position will be based at the RVC Campuses in Hertfordshire but may occasionally involve teaching at other campus locations. Depending on the applicant's desires, clinical work could be considered and encouraged in line with the applicants interests as part of the role.
Ideally, we are looking to fill this position with a full-time employee, but we would consider a part time role or job share for the right candidate(s). The salary for this position sits within Grade 6 on the RVC salary scale which ranges from £39,719 to £50,519 including London Weighting. The starting salary will be commensurate with experience. In addition, we offer a generous reward package including:
- Competitive and attractive pension package
- Generous 30 days annual leave (plus bank holidays and concessionary days) pro-rata
- On site café and restaurant
- Free membership to the Fitness and Wellbeing Centre located on site (gym, badminton, climbing wall, Zumba, yoga and Pilates classes included)
- Cycle to work scheme
- Free mini-bus service to and from Potters Bar station and Hawkshead Campus
- A range of family friendly policies, including adoption, maternity and paternity pay and leave
