Full Job Description

We are seeking a new member for our talented and dedicated team to play a key role in supporting the growth and development of our makerspace facilities. As an enthusiastic makerspace technician, you will oversee the day-to-day operations and activities. This includes developing innovative and modern solutions to training, support of students and coordinating research needs and equipment usage., An integral part of maintaining the spaces, services and equipment will be to serve as primary liaison to various external contractors and campus departments (Computer services, Estates, Professional services, Safety Health and Employee Well-being services). In addition, ensure the physical and environmental conditions of facilities and that equipment are safe, running efficiently and properly maintained. You will also be responsible for demonstrations and delivery of training and associated materials, safety standards, and operating protocols within those facilities. You will be working with students and staff of all backgrounds with varying levels of knowledge of sciences and makerspace equipment. Using your knowledge and experience you will foster creativity and solutions-based thinking while supporting students and researchers in course-related, extracurricular and outreach projects and academic research related to the making facilities. These facilities are in their early stages of development and you will work with the department leads to identify additional equipment and tool needs and to centralise working spaces.

Working with a range of equipment, techniques and individuals, you will have a keen and independent approach to your continuous personal development. You will be highly organised, diplomatic, an excellent communicator and passionate about fostering the maker mindset in both students and researchers alike. We will also be looking for you to have:

  • A relevant degree, and ideally practical experience and/or qualifications in hardware related technical support in Computer Science, Electronics or Robotics
  • Experience in prototyping electronic and mechanical devices including sensors, actuators, microcontrollers, electrical test equipment, 3D printing and CAD
  • Experience writing safe working protocols and risk assessments and an ability to implement good and safe practices

    Our Department delivers postgraduate and undergraduate taught programmes to over 800 students.
  • Our research themes include Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interactions, Mathematical foundations of Computation and Visual Computing. The makerspace facilities offer a key learning opportunity for our students to put theory into practical forms, delivering projects as part of their learning, and offers support to researchers in design and development of novel kit/apparatus.
