Full Job Description

We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe.   • Deliver fee-paying work including acting as Technical Lead Evaluator / Lead Assessor where appropriate.

  • Complete independent technical reviews of assessment outputs to support certification decisions, according to IEC ISO 17020 and IEC ISO 17065.

  • Foster a culture of right first-time delivery and work with Project Managers/ Principals to ensure effective project delivery.

  • Oversee/ Monitor the effectiveness of staff inputs on projects and deal with issues.

  • Take appropriate responsibility for implementation of company QMS procedures.


  • Â

    Technical Leadership
  • Provide technical mentoring to the team and others in the delivery of independent assessment and inspection activities.

  • Provide leadership with knowledge management and digital delivery initiatives for the team.

  • Maintain and update MMRA QMS technical procedures and forms to effectively deliver our roles as UK Approved Body, Designated Body, CSM-RA Assessment Body and EN 50126 Independent Safety Assessor.

  • Represent MMRA in industry forums to keep up to date with the regulatory framework and any changes to legal requirements and technical specifications.

  • Lead accreditation assessments to maintain and expand (as required) the MMRA accreditation as an inspection body (IEC ISO 17020), product certification body (IEC ISO 17065) and management systems assessment body (IEC ISO 17021).

  • As appropriate, work with the Heads of Discipline (HoDs), Practice Leaders, Account Leaders and Professional Heads to extend the Rail Assurance service offering in response to business needs.

  • Work with Account Leaders to assess the scope of services and business development opportunities and respond to client feedback with a view to improving skills and addressing issues.

  • Working with the Head of MMRA and SE&A HoD, take an active lead in shaping the strategic direction of the discipline in line with the priorities set in the divisional business plan and organisational purpose.

  • Work with the Head of MMRA, SE&A HoD, Practice Leaders, Resource Manager and Professional Heads to identify and implement continuous improvement actions in technical quality and delivery efficiency.

    Resource and People Management
  • Lead, inspire and motivate people in the team to achieve high levels of performance and excellence.

  • Increase visibility and improve understanding of the independent assessment body services offered by MMRA.

  • Carry out internal competence assessments of auditors/ inspectors and endorse allocation of assessment teams.

  • Provide supervision and mentoring, identifying opportunities for professional development and progression along with specific line management responsibilities for designated direct reports.

  • Ensure all health, safety and welfare practices are adhered to (e.g. travel and site visits).

  • Play a leadership role in wellbeing initiatives being undertaken in the division.Â

  • Work with the Head of MMRA, SE&A HoD, Account Leaders, Principal Account Leaders and Resource Manager to proactively manage workloads and effective forecasting and ensure maximum utilisation of team members, allocate appropriate staff to projects or bids as agreed.

  • Highlight any recruitment needs and work with the Head of MMRA and SE&A HoD to develop and implement recruitment plans, undertake recruitment activities as necessary.

    A fundamental part of this is respecting each person’s differences and striving to meet their needs.Â, We are seeking an experienced Rail Assurance professional with a proven track record of managing teams and successfully leading independent conformity assessment and inspection activities in Rail projects., Be enthusiastic about applying and delivering assurance, inspections and certification services on Rail projects.

  • Have the ability to lead teams, work independently, take the initiative, make decisions and work to tight deadlines to meet client needs.

  • Be able to build and maintain strong relationships with both your colleagues and external clients through excellent verbal and written communication in English.

  • Have a strong attention to detail, as well as having a logical but creative approach to problem solving.

  • Be able to liaise confidently with external customers and colleagues across Mott MacDonald.Â

  • Be prepared to travel in the UK and possibly abroad for short periods of time., A post graduate qualification in engineering, mathematical or science-based subject.

  • Experience of CSM-RA from an Assessment Body perspective and CSM-RA delivery from a project perspective.Â

  • Proven experience of involvement in hazard identification / risk assessment workshops.

  • Experience in interpreting legislation especially related to the Common Safety Method, Railway Interoperability and application on assurance and safety engineering projects.

  • Experience in delivering conformity assessment services according to the Railway Interoperability Regulations and the requirements of NTSNs/ TSIs and NTRs.

  • You will be a member of a relevant professional institution (e.g. IET, IMechE, IRSE, SaRS, INCOSE) and professionally registered as a Chartered Engineer (or equivalent).

  • Good report writing, team leadership, team working and communication skills.

  • Competent in using standard office software to produce well-presented, coherent professional documentation.

  • Good presentation skills.

  • Ability to interpret regulatory and legal requirements., Degree in a suitable engineering discipline.

  • Qualification in Systems Engineering.

  • Experience of Systems Engineering through the full lifecycle.

  • Experience of using Systems Engineering tools and techniques (e.g. DOORS, EA).

  • Some experience of design, production, installation and commissioning of engineering systems.

  • Experience of working in the rail industry for an accredited independent conformity assessment body.
