The Technical Support Officer role is a development opportunity in the fields of waste management, radiological protection and nuclear material management. We are looking to recruit a technical support officer to assist and support the infrastructure and compliance function in delivery of solutions and effective approaches in the disciplines of waste management, radiological protection and nuclear material control. The role holder will support with deriving waste management options for facility waste streams, new projects; supporting the facility in compliant removal of redundant assets and supporting with effective management of the POCO/liabilities budget. The role also requires the holder to support with Radiation Protection activities and once trained be responsible and support with routine aspects of radiation protection. In the field of nuclear material controls the role holder will be supporting with day-to-day movements, and the key receipts and dispatches of nuclear material. The role will require a hands-on and can-do mindset, combined with sound communication skills to collaborate across multidiscipline teams. The grading for this role takes into account that it is a development opportunity and support will be provided to the successful applicant to achieve technical competency in one or more of the discipline functions.,

  • Support the building with waste routes and waste management services to the facility, internal customer interactions and liaising with external stakeholders/service providers.
  • Assist with POCO budgets, securing funds from projects and effective application of funds in waste sentencing and disposal.
  • Development across the primary functions in order to support the business in the absence of the lead SME.
  • Supporting overall team function on matters of radiological protection as part of the wider service provision to the facility.
  • Support Nuclear Material Accountancy in Preston Laboratory, including control all receipts and dispatches of nuclear material to and from the Preston Laboratory.
  • Contribute to annual stock takes of nuclear material and provide information to stakeholders on material stored in the material accountancy system.

    Demonstrable experience in taking on responsibility, and using initiative, to prioritise work effectively under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; be able to multitask and re-prioritise to meet changing needs and project deadlines in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years' worth of UK residency)., Prior experience of environmental/waste management, radiation protection, or nuclear material management.
  • Experience of working in a high hazard industry.
  • Good influencing, presentational and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to interpret regulations.
  • Holding a degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
