Full Job Description

Provide support to the Team Leader to organise and motivate the team so that work is undertaken safely, efficiently and to the relevant standards. Undertake inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal work as allocated. Where directed, act as Team Leader. In order to complete these tasks you will require previous railway experience in the S&T department, and hold some S&T specific competencies. Or at the very least have some knowledge of electrical systems and how they work.

A critical part of the work we do is the daily up keep of the rail network. As a technician you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from a variety of different backgrounds, and this might be the first time that you've even considered a career in rail. We're focused on your transferable skills and behaviours and if you can demonstrate that, then we will provide you with all the necessary training to have you working safely and competently out on the network.

Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call in this role if you opt to take the GTRM IMC25 contract

About the role (External)

Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team's operatives.

Technicians specialise in a range of disciplines and for this role you'll become a specialist in Signalling & Telecoms. You'll be working with equipment including signals that control when trains can run, level crossings, and points systems. With your willingness to learn, you'll develop a huge range of technical skills across a range of manual, electrical and digital equipment.

Our technicians work outside in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. You could be involved in demanding manual work, often with the need to transport kit, across tricky terrain. Being safety focused, respectful of rules and a team player will be critical as you'll often be working next to moving trains travelling at high speed.

Every day will be different, but you can expect to be involved in the following activities:

1. Carry out work safely and in accordance with the safe systems of work procedures, method statements or other relevant instructions.

2. Undertake work and associated duties for which you are trained and competent.

3. Undertake and direct work activities in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with all relevant standards.

4. Control and check the quality of work undertaken and confirm assets are compliant to standards.

5. Establish and maintain appropriate safety arrangements for staff under your control including Contractors.

6. Check that the staff under your control have the appropriate and valid competencies.

7. Check that vehicles, plant, tools, equipment and materials under your control are fit for use and are used/stored and disposed of correctly.

8. Accurately report all work completed/not completed and produce/maintain records as required.

9. Contribute to your own development and that of others.

10. Adhere to company policies and procedures.

· Experience of arranging and implementing safe systems of work.

· Knowledge of how to organise and control the safe and efficient delivery of work.

· Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team.

· Able to lead, motivate and direct a team.

· Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

· Knowledge of signalling inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques.

· Conversant with standards, procedures and instructions.

· Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post, required by business need.

· Ideally hold (or be working towards) an NVQ level 1 or 2 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject or have attained an appropriate level of knowledge through equivalent relevant experience.

· Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
