Full Job Description

Within the surgical team you will help manage the preparation of the operating theatres., To help and support patients before surgery, preparing a wide range of specialist equipment and drugs, including anaesthetic machines, intravenous equipment and devices that safely secure the patient's airway during anaesthesia

Surgery

You'll play an important part of the surgical team by preparing all the necessary equipment for surgery, including microscopes, lasers, and endoscopes

You will ensure the correct safety checks are carried out prior to the start of the procedure and are responsible for all surgical instruments, equipment, and swabs during the operation.

You will become efficient and effective in anticipating the requirements of the surgical team and responding effectively ensuring high standards of clinical outcome and best patient experience

Recovery

You'll support and monitor patient on arrival to the recovery area and provide appropriate treatment until they have recovered from the effects of the anaesthesia and/or surgery; assessing and treating the patient until they are discharged to a ward

Develop as an autonomous practitioner with indirect support of seniors

Prepare for emergencies that might occur

Plan the day relating to workload assessing specific requirements to deliver optimum care

Provide planned peri-operative care, focusing on individual patients' needs

Scrub

Maintain a sterile field mitigating risk of infection

Accountability for swabs, needles instrumentation and equipment used for procedures

Safe specimen labelling and transportation

Return instruments for decontamination to sterile services, with appropriate paperwork and reporting defects

Anaesthetic

Provide assistance to the anaesthetist

Manage controlled drugs

Assist in transfer of critically ill patients within the hospital and externally if necessary

Recovery

Carry out the preliminary checking of all required equipment

Receive patients from theatre, ensuring information pertaining to the patient's care needs, identification, anaesthetic and surgery is correct

Participate in the post-operative recovery of patients at all levels of dependency

Assess patient's condition, pain and airway requirements, administer analgesics as prescribed

Liaise with medical staff any adverse changes with the patient

Provide care for high dependency ventilated patients in the absence of HDU beds

Ensure the patient meets the discharge criteria prior to returning to the ward area

Ensure the safe and effective transfer of information regarding the patient's perioperative journey is handed over to the ward staff
