Full Job Description

We are seeking a Traincare Leading Hand to join our team at the Gosforth Depot, reporting to the Fleet Duty Manager. This is a fixed-term contract that extends until 31st December 2025. The successful candidate will work a permanent nightshift roster including weekends and Bank Holidays. The role will focus on managing the performance of Traincare Operatives, ensuring cleaning standards for Train Presentation and associated quality and cleaning standards are maintained and timely outputs are achieved for audit purposes. The successful applicant will have a responsibility to ensure all cleaning materials are controlled and used correctly by the Traincare Team.,

  • Work a roster focussed on delivering SQR targets, including Bank Holidays and weekends where required.
  • Primarily be based at Gosforth Depot and will work on the system in Emergency situations to facilitate the cleaning of Metrocars/Locos etc.
  • Will be a 'Working Hand' as necessary to assist with Cleaning Programmes and meeting SQR targets, undertaking all duties covered by Train Care Operatives.
  • Ensure SQR and Depot targets / standards are maintained and audited to ensure continuing effectiveness.
  • Manage the performance of Train Care employees and keep appropriate records, to ensure the required standards and outputs are achieved.
  • Ensure Train Care materials are controlled and used correctly - provide training and assessment of employees as required.
  • Provide timely and accurate reports to Fleet Duty Managers and Train Care Manager on materials used, conditions of vehicles, issues arising with proposals for efficiency measures.
  • Conduct SAP13 duties as required.
  • Examine, check, and maintain records for all cleaning machines and equipment for working operations and availability.
  • Prioritise and organise the work of Train Care Operatives, in the most efficient and cost effective manner, on a day-to-day (24 hour) basis, for cleaning in conjunction with Maximo maintenance programme, SQR targets and Depot duties.
  • Ensure staff work to recognised cleaning schedules and conduct required Quality Inspections.
  • Supervise any contractors performing work bought in to meet demands of SQR.
  • Consult with Fleet Duty Manager re day-to-day programmes and out of course duties; including Depot upkeep as required and SQR initiatives.
  • Take responsibility for the day to day operation of the Automatic Vehicle Wash to ensure that it is working correctly, that the appropriate detergent is always available and that the control room of the Automatic Wash is kept in a clean and tidy manner.
  • Comply with all relevant safety rules, Work instructions, Safe Systems of Works, and Fleet Duty Manager's /Engineer's instructions.
  • Safely train Apprentices and other staff members on the full range of duties including competency based training as required/instructed.
  • Assist in the preparation of Safe Systems of Work, Rule Changes, Risk Assessments and conduct Safety Management checks as required.
  • Assist non-Engineering Group staff in duties conducted on rolling stock or in Gosforth Depot.
  • Compile and maintain accurate examination sheets, cleaning records, and other relevant documentation - utilising appropriate IT systems or relevant paper based documents.
  • Perform any duties trained and deemed competent to perform eg driving Fork Lift trucks when needed, as part of Train Care duties.
  • Other duties may include slinging and movement of equipment as required in relation to lifting movements for Train Care activities.
  • Contribute to and monitor Depot upkeep for cleanliness, waste streams etc and take responsibility for cleanliness and environmental obligations on the Depot.
  • Participate in any Service Quality Regime work that may be required.
  • Conduct any Tasks as shown in the attached Skills Matrix where the Train Care Leading Hand is trained and deemed competent., Ensuring everyone is given the same opportunity and respect they deserve whatever the situation may be.
