Full Job Description
The Mortuary Service at Cardiff and Vale University Health board is looking for an enthusiastic, committed individual to join them as a trainee Anatomical Pathology Technician.
You will assist in maintaining the Mortuary and body storage services, across the Cardiff and Vale Health board, while working to your vocational and academic qualifications.
This is a mentally and physically challenging role, managing the deceased and bereaved, ensuring dignity and respect at all times., The role will be fundamental in providing services to relatives of the deceased, funeral directors and hospital staff. under the direction of the Qualified Anatomical Pathology Technology staff.
This will include keeping the mortuary safe and hygienic, receiving and storing deceased patients, preparing and conducting viewings and releasing deceased patients to Funeral directors.
Previous experience of Hospital IT computer systems would be desirable but full training will be provided., To receive, register and release patients who have died within the UHB and across the South Wales Health Authority Area ensuring all data entry on the computer system is complete and documentation is correct.
To identify and register patients effects and valuables according to existing UHB policy
To provide patient measurements to Funeral Directors on request.
To store patient according to the patient's condition e.g. high risk, decomposed, in accordance with national legislation.
To liaise with relatives, the Chaplains department, ward/medical staff, Police officers, bereavement care co-ordinators, Funeral directors, Coroner's office and other professional bodies.
To co-ordinate and conduct viewings and co-ordinate and conduct Police identifications.
To ensure that full administrative and documentation procedures are completed in relation to cremation forms, so that cremation services are unaffected.
To assist in the co-ordination of technical support to the Trusts Corneal and Homograph retrieval service allowing legal requirements to be fulfilled by the UHB.
To liaise with other departments within the Lab Medicine directorate for the transport and preparation for analysis of pathological specimens.Comply with all Department and UHB policies and procedures relating to organ and tissue retention and ensure that records are correctly maintained.
Collect audit data on a daily basis or as when instructed to support the efficient running of the department and participate in research and development projects as and when they arise.Maintain high standards of hygiene within the mortuary department and associated areas.
To provide mortuary services in line with the UHB major incident policy.
To deal with telephone and other enquiries relating to the service both from inside and outside the UHB, efficiently and politely.
Adhere to good working practice and observe all UHB and department fire, security, and health and safety regulations.
To organize and schedule x-rays and liaising with x-ray department.
To assist in the upkeep and maintenance of the mortuary and its associated equipment in compliance with current safety regulations.
To ensure the safety of visitors to the mortuary and to provide appropriate facilities and Protective personal equipment.
Ensure that there are adequate supplies of equipment and consumables.
To travel and work in other mortuaries according to rostered commitment.
To liaise with the Medical Records Department and/or Histology Office in the collection and safekeeping of case notes and other forms of documentation.
To participate and support patient transfers using the organizations private ambulance.
