Full Job Description

The main purpose of this role is to provide supervised care and husbandry to laboratory animals. This will include animal housing, nutrition, breeding and routines.,

  • General husbandry duties e.g. cleaning, watering and feeding of a wide range of species under supervision.
  • To recognise symptoms of pain, suffering or distress in animals and know the procedures for reporting.
  • To gain an understanding of the biology and care of all the species in their care.
  • To explain tasks, methods or other information orally to service users or senior members of the team when required.
  • Show potential for teaming and career progression.
  • Contribute to team objectives.
  • To work alongside senior animal technicians in a collegiate manner and build rapport within the team and the wider University.
  • Convey professionalism and composure.

    You will have awareness of the ethics and legislation surrounding laboratory animals and always demonstrate a commitment to animal welfare., Formal qualification in animal care or proven equivalent experience.
  • 4 GCSE's (or equivalent) at Grade C or above including biology, mathematics, English and one other (preferably another science).
  • Have knowledge of the ASPA 1986 act.
  • Understand the ethical issues with animals used for research
  • The ability to work out of hours (i.e. evenings, weekends, Christmas closure) - appropriate time in lieu will be given.
  • Successful candidates may be subject to pre-employment screening carried out on our behalf by a third party. The offer of employment will be dependent on the successful candidate passing that screening.
