Job overview
An opportunity has arisen in Gloucestershire Trailblazer programme for recruitment of an Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) as we continue to expand our service. In line with the government's priority to increase access and availability of mental health and well being support for children and young people, the new EMHP role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children and young people, working across both educational and healthcare sectors in England.
Successful candidates will be employed on a full-time basis and based within Gloucestershire, where the Mental Health Support Teams deliver mental health support across a range of educational settings in the region. As part of this role there will be a requirement to travel to the University for the training from the service where the candidate is based., 1 x Fixed Term contract/secondment opportunity for up to 12 months
Internal applicants who wish to be considered for a secondment opportunity should discuss with their line manager the suitability of a possible secondment
Attend and fulfil all the requirements of the training element of the post including practical, academic and practice-based assessments. As well as attendance at the University for training, fulfil private study requirements to enhance learning and prepare assignments for examination, for at least one day a week.
Apply learning from the training program directly to practice through the course. Receive practice tutoring from educational providers in relation to course work to meet the required standards.
Prepare and present case load information to supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the governance obligations of the trainee, supervisor and service are delivered.
Respond to and evidence the implementation of improved practice because of supervisor feedback. Engage in and respond to personal development supervision to improve competences and practice.
Be involved in the evaluation of the course and disseminate research and service evaluation findings through presentations and supervisory discussions.
Be educationally supervised, supported and assessed oneself to assess and deliver outcome focused, evidence-based interventions in educational settings for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties.
Developing skills in supporting children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties, their parents/carers, families and educators in the self-management of presenting difficulties.
Developing and practising evidence-based skills under supervisory support of working in partnership with children, young people, their families and educators in the development of plans for the specific intervention and agreeing outcomes.
Developing and learning the skills required in order to enable children and young people in education, and where appropriate parents/carers to collaborate and co produce their own agreed plan of care.
Show evidence in a variety of forms that at all times assessment and intervention is provided from an inclusive values base, which recognises and respects diversity.
Discuss with supervisors and agree to accept appropriate referrals for children and young people in educational settings, according to agreed local and national and local referral routes, processes and procedures.
Under supervision, undertake accurate assessments of risk to self and others.
Learn, understand, rationalise and adhere to the protocols within the educational service to which the post holder is attached.
We provide a Multi-professional preceptor ship programme that is aligned to the National Preceptor ship Framework for Nursing and have been awarded the Interim quality mark from NHS England. Our programme is provided to all Newly Qualified; Nurses, Nursing Associates, Internationally Educated Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals and Return to Practice Practitioners. In addition to the programme we also offer all preceptee's the opportunity of enrolling and completing the level 7 (Masters) 15 credit validated module "Preceptor ship for Healthcare" (AP7026).
Newly qualified Social Workers are offered the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment programme (ASYE) which is similar to a preceptor ship programme., For more information please see the attached 'Additional Information for Applicants' document.
Salary Update
With effect from 1 April 2024, there is a 5.5 per cent consolidated uplift for all Agenda for Change (AfC) staff on NHS terms and conditions. This may change the salary that is advertised on this advert.
The national NHS Employers team are working through the processes required to implement the recently announced new Agenda for Change pay award for 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025. The related national Pay Advisory Notice (which confirms the details including dates) is yet to be issued to employers.

Successful Trainee EMHP candidates will be offered a full-time educational programme delivered specifically for the role in partnership with the University of Exeter. This post will be funded at NHS Agenda for Change (AfC) Band 4 level, gaining credits towards either a degree or diploma level qualification (depending on level of previous academic study), plus guaranteed employment on completion of training, with a starting salary projected to be based on the NHS AfC Band 5 scale., To enable this, all applicants must demonstrate in their application the ability to work at degree level or have an equivalent level of relevant experience, with a proven record of previous learning or formal study in child development, well being or mental health. Further to that experience of working with children and young people and an understanding of the educational system in England is highly desirable.
The training programme for this post starts in September 2024, is 12 months in duration and will consist of academic and supervised practice learning across mental health services and educational settings, such as primary and secondary schools, and further education colleges.
Delivery of the programme will be provided through a combination of taught days within a University, independent self-guided study days and experience gained in education wellbeing and mainstream mental health services
During training, the post-holder will work under supervision to gain experience across healthcare and educational settings to enable them to gain the level of competence required to deliver high-quality, evidence-based early interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health problems.
