Full Job Description

The Trainee Surveyor will join the Instrumentation and Monitoring (I&M) team, on a major civil construction site, assisting in the day-to-day supervision of a Subcontractor and assisting the Lead Surveyor with site duties and survey monitoring. As part of this team, the Trainee Surveyor is to assist the I&M Senior Surveyor in all activities whilst learning the role of a surveyor and developing an understanding to the principles of surveying and instrumentation and monitoring. Mentoring forms a key part of development, this is combined with academic options, such as the geospatial apprenticeship programme which includes college attendance to work towards qualification. This is a full-time, active, site-based role near Euston Station, London and would suit someone who has capacity to work in varying environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, outdoors) while maintaining energy and focus.   • Assisting the monitoring team ensuring the design, planning and installation of ground movement monitoring systems is carried out correctly.
  • Assisting the surveyor with producing monitoring data from any surveys undertaken.
  • Writing shift reports and assisting with supervision of subcontractors shift reports.
  • Assist the surveyor carrying out instrument calibrations.
  • Assisting with subcontract supervision, including quality and health and safety control.
  • Be responsible for the care, maintenance and administration of specialist survey equipment, ensuring equipment is in order and available to complete survey activities as required.
  • Be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of themselves and their colleagues. Be familiar with, and demonstrate commitment to the requirements of the Health & Safety and Environmental Policies.
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project., You'll be a welcomed member of the wider team, with opportunities to take on additional responsibility, join one of our networks for women, military or LGBT+ staff, and participate in cultural and social events with the local community (e.g. as a STEM ambassador).

  • A readiness for the continuous learning of the techniques and procedures of Engineering Surveying.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly grasp new concepts, tools, and technologies.
  • An aptitude for mathematics and IT will be advantageous. The Trainee Surveyor will enroll in the Geospatial Mapping and Science Specialist Degree Apprenticeship, in September 2025, with the following entry requirement: At least two 'A' levels or equivalent and hold a GCSE English and Mathematics at grade A to C or grade 4 and above. This is fully funded by the Company and the role will include one day a week at univeristy.
  • A willingness to work occasional nightshifts. Standard hours are Monday-Friday, 0800 to 1700 but occasional night shift/weekend work may be required to deliver works.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team setting, contributing to group goals and contributing to a positive team culture.
  • A commitment to punctuality is required to ensure timely delivery of survey tasks, in order not to delay the program.
  • Competent in using Microsoft office software. E.g. Microsoft Word and Excel., A physical or mental impairment, which has a substantial and long-term effect (over 12 months) adverse effect on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities
  • Demonstrated in your application and pre-interview stage that you meet the minimum job criteria and person specification for the role

    The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK's new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK's 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services
  • The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
