Full Job Description

The primary role of the Data Centre Operator is to handle the operation and monitoring of the Bank's computer systems, services and applications. This will include day to day operational duties, such as system monitoring, starting, closing of applications and running of evening suites and batch runs.

The role also involves being the front-line support for a majority of the Bank's core systems and contacting support teams when necessary.

In addition, the team are encouraged to maintain their own documentation, processes and procedures and constantly review these for all systems.

Service Operations are responsible for the upkeep and management of all the Bank's Data Centres.

The Operations Staff work on a 12 hour, 24x7 shift pattern. (This will include weekends and Bank Holidays). Operators work on a rota basis, at two of the Bank's Data Centre Sites based in London and Debden, there is also the option to work from home by agreement with the relevant Shift Leader.

Service Operations staff are expected to carry out their responsibilities for all of the Bank's applications, running on a variety of platforms (HP NonStop (Tandems), Redhat Linux, Windows, Cisco UCS and EMC platforms).

Service Operations also provide out of hours cover for the Technology Service Desk.

Service Operations staff are expected to cover other shifts for leave, training and sickness.

Team Overview

The Service Operations Team comprises the Service Operations Manager, a Shift Supervisor and 25 shift working Operations staff, split into 5, 24x7 shifts, each having a Shift Leader, Deputy and 3 operators.

Operations Management work a standard working day guiding the operations team: attending meetings, producing management information and collaborating closely with customers.

The successful candidate will join one of the 5 shifts and will be expected to work on the current shift pattern and will report directly to the Shift Leader of that shift.

Detailed Description of the Role:

The successful candidate will be given the relevant training over an estimated two-year period to ensure that the following responsibilities can be undertaken:

  • We are responsible for ensuring the smooth and safe running of the Bank's systems.

  • We are responsible for the operation and monitoring of the Bank's systems.

  • We produce and maintain the Operations user documentation.

  • We are responsible for the Bank's Data Centres to the standards detailed in the Data Centre Code of Conduct.

  • We assist Technology colleagues by covering the Technology Service Desk out of office hours.

    Experience of any of the following platforms would be an advantage, but are not essential as full training will be given:

  • HP NonStop (Tandem) hardware and basic utilities (FUP, Spooler, TMMP, RDF, TACL, SQL, Viewpoint) and the 3rd party monitoring tools Multibatch and Reflex

  • Red Hat Linux basic operator commands and utilities

  • SCOM

  • SWIFT

  • Microsoft Windows 10

  • Storage Area Networks

  • Enterprise Backup

  • Entuity Network monitoring


  • Experience of working within small close-knit teams and must have a good teamwork ethic.

    Operations staff must be flexible and ready to cope with change.

    This role offers a salary of circa £27,440 - £30,870. In addition, we also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below:
