Tree Surgeon

Location : Mountsorrel, Leicestershire

Salary: A£29,784 - A£32,004 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus 10% market premia

The Role

Come and work as part of a team that is an Arboricultural Association ARB Approved contractor and help deliver a best value, customer-focussed service throughout Leicestershire and occasionally, surrounding counties. You will provide a comprehensive and professional arboriculture service for all trees under the jurisdiction of Leicestershire County Council and other clients in the private sector in the County of Leicestershire and surrounding counties. Activities include tree surgery and felling, planting and maintenance, hedge layering and planting schemes.

The nature of the work may involve you carrying out activities outside of normal working hours, including night, weekends and public holidays, in all weather conditions to meet the needs of the service. You may be required to support a call-out rota to cover evening, weekend and public holiday emergencies. (Exclusion will apply to employees aged under 21)

This role is a "Safety Critical Post" and, consequently, subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with their policies and procedures. A copy of their Substance Misuse Policy and Procedure is available upon request.

Skills and Qualifications

for this post you must have,

  • The following qualifications: National recognised Certificate in Arboriculture / Horticulture, Relevant NPTC, ('CS') Units including Tree Climbing, Conduct Ariel Rescue, Mobile Platform License


  • OR have demonstrable evidence of the skills and experience as outlined in the job description, together with a commitment to attain the essential qualifications

  • You hold a Valid Driving Licence; ideally you also hold a valid Large Goods Vehicle Licence and CPC Trained with current DQC Card.

  • You have experience of all aspects of arboriculture work, substantial experience of using related machinery and of compliance with, and management of on-site bio-security issues (relating to pathogens, pests, disease, and disorders).

  • You have knowledge of arboriculture specifications, materials, and workmanship requirements and of the primary identification of tree species, including Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) to assess the general condition of the tree, and understand basic fungal brackets.

  • You have knowledge of safe working practices when using plant and machinery, of Aerial Rescue procedures and an understanding of legislation including driver's hours, PPE, and manual handling. You undertake Continuous Professional Development relating to Arboriculture Association Standards.

  • You abide by the Industry Code of Practice for Arboriculture - specifically relating to Working at Height Operations, including pruning and free fall dismantling, rigging, crane, MEWP, and ladders and are able to carry out safe and effective aerial rescue operations both drills and on live sites.

  • You are able and willing to work with everyone in the team, to use your own initiative in planning and prioritising and can respond confidently to customers & colleagues with understanding & diplomacy whilst maintaining an objective & professional stance.


  • You must also have an understanding of, and commitment to, equality, diversity and inclusion.
