The Paediatric Rainbow Centre is a highly active department caring for a young and often underserved paediatric population. The centre includes a 21-bed ward, featuring 7 individual cubicles and a well-equipped 2-bed High Dependency Unit (HDU). It also houses a 6-bed day care ward for minor surgeries in children over 3 years old, as well as a 6-bed observation unit and a total of 23 beds, including 2 for intensive care and 4 for HDU-level care. The Level II Neonatal Unit provides care for babies born after 27 weeks of gestation and works closely with the tertiary neonatal unit at the Royal London Hospital as part of a collaborative network. This role presents an excellent opportunity for a doctor with a passion for teaching to join Newham University Hospital as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Paediatrics. It is ideal for those looking to enhance their skills in medical education while maintaining limited but focused clinical duties. The position is particularly suitable for Speciality Trainees (ST3-ST8+ or equivalent) seeking an out-of-programme experience., The main focus of the role is to deliver excellent teaching to medical students during their placement in paediatrics at Newham University Hospital, to ensure that the students timetable runs smoothly and that students have a good educational experience in their Paediatric placement both by delivering teaching and by facilitating teaching by others. The post will have fixed clinical commitments which should support better co-ordination with the clinical teams when organising the teaching activities for students and also help the teaching registrar to maintain their clinical competencies necessary for appraisal and revalidation., This is a Trust Clinical teaching fellow post suitable for doctors ST3 - ST7 or equivalent. The Trust is committed to supporting the post holder in developing their clinical and teaching career in Paediatrics. This post is part time ( 0.5 wte) fixed term appointment for 12 month. This post does not have any on call banding. Teaching Duties The appointee will be responsible for organising and delivering the teaching for undergraduate medical students, physician associate students, students on elective placements. He/she will work under the direct supervision of the site lead for undergraduate teaching in Paediatrics and the local undergraduate Associate Dean. The Clinical teaching fellow will work closely and collaboratively with other educational fellows and site undergraduate coordinator. The post holder will be involved in:

  • Planning the rotation of medical students
  • Providing induction to each new intake of students
  • Teaching clinical skills and providing bedside teaching
  • Coordinating junior and senior medical staff for bedside teaching
  • Contributing to student appraisal and assessment
  • Help students to complete their log book
  • Assisting with student development portfolios
  • Organizing and examining mock OSCE exams
  • Marking and supervising written course work and supporting SSCs (Student selected components)
  • Facilitating student grand rounds and case presentations
  • Providing pastoral support to students
  • Year 4 Medical students: Students are attached to Paediatrics for 4 weeks. We have 6 batches of 4th medical students in a year rotating through General Paediatrics, Neonates and Community Paediatrics. Each batch will have 8 students. Year 2 Medical students In year 2 of the MBBS programme students are introduced to a hospital placement. Barts Medical school sends us 2 groups of Medical Students each year. Each group attends once a week for 12 weeks. Clinical teaching fellow expected to support these students by introducing them to the department and acting as point of contact. Physician Associate students QUML also sends us Physician Associate students regularly. Their requirements are similar to the 4th year Medical students, but more focused on clinical assessments and practical procedures. Their teaching sessions could be combined with the 4th year medical students whenever feasible. Elective Students: QUML also send us some elective students from overseas from time to time. There are no formal teaching requirements for these students. Clinical teaching fellow will act as point of contact and support. We may also have some Year 5 students doing their SSC (Student Selectee Components) from time to time. Other Teaching Duties:
  • To contribute to the Graduate Entry Programme Clinical Skills course
  • To help organise and examine in the final year OSCE
  • To supervise students on the Medical Education Selected Study Component
  • To assist in medical student simulation sessions
  • To participate in the annual Medical School site inspection visit to Newham
  • University Hospital New methods of teaching are encouraged. Previous experience in problem-based learning, facilitating simulations sessions, student assessment and appraisal is not essential, as training will be available and the appointee will be encouraged to participate in the Barts and the London School of Medicine Certificate in Learning and Teaching (CILT) modules. For an appropriate candidate, application for an honorary lecturer contract with the Barts and the London School of Medicine will be made. The Associate Dean oversees education quality. The appointee will be invited to join the Newham Undergraduate Programme Steering Group, which meets quarterly to discuss teaching issues and review teaching at the hospital. There are also clinical teaching fellows in medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology and for teaching of dental students involved in student teaching at Newham. Clinical duties The appointee will undertake dedicate one day per week of clinical duties. This may involve helping the clinical teams in ward work and outpatient clinics. We expect the candidate would be able to work in middle grade position. We do not expect the appointee to contribute to out of hours work. Medical students are posted in batches. When the medical students are not around appointee is expected to attend the clinical work. Other responsibilities To participate effectively and to contribute to clinical audits/quality improvement projects and postgraduate clinical teaching programmes. The appointee will have the opportunity to attend department teaching programmes, grand rounds and radiology meetings. Medical Practice All members of The Trust's medical staff are expected to practice with in the GMC guideline, in particular those contain within the booklet on Good Medical Practice and Maintain Good Medical Practice. Additionally, all members of the Trust's medical staff are expected to be familiar with the Trust Professional Standard Advisory Group Process and to follow this as appropriate.
