Hammersmith Hospital is home to the West London Renal and Transplant Centre, has three large cancer treatment centres (hepatobiliary, upper GI and gynaecology) and a specialist cardiac service with a 24/7 primary angioplasty centre, cardiac and thoracic surgery and intensive care. In addition, it covers a broad range of other surgical specialities including endocrine, urology, obstetrics and infertility.

Hammersmith Hospital is famous for its research achievements and has a large community of Imperial College London postgraduate medical students and researchers.

Main duties of the job

Theatre list allocations change on a weekly basis which will allow the post holder to experience all of the anaesthetic subspecialties on offer at the Hammersmith under direct consultant supervision. Over 80% of Hammersmith operating lists are designated consultant-delivered training lists.

General anaesthetic duties include preoperative assessment, intra-operative care and post-operative management of theatre cases.

In addition to elective theatre work, the post holder will cover cardiac arrests and the acute pain service when on call. The rota follows a full shift pattern with prospective cover, and is compliant with the European Working Time Directive and the 2016 junior doctor contract.

Whilst on call the post holder is expected to be proactive and liaise effectively with the emergency theatre sister, anaesthetic registrar and relevant surgical specialities to prioritise the emergency workload and facilitate the timely management of any emergency theatre bookings. They are expected to respect other team members' roles and to work constructively within the anaesthetic and theatre teams.
