Full Job Description

Our units function as part of the Urgent and emergency care service and are essentially ambulatory emergency department with associated acuity and complexity. We accept patients referred from GPs on these pathways and are trailblazers in accepting patients from 111 and the London Ambulance service directly.
The Same Day Emergency Care doctor will work alongside the SDEC team to co-ordinate the assessment, investigation and appropriate clinical review for patients who are referred to the service. It is expected that the SDEC doctors will develop new pathways and work to expand and improve the service. The service runs Monday to Friday 08.00-22.00 and Saturday to Sunday 08.00 - 20.30.
The SDEC team are flexible and supportive of each other, and opportunities are available for doctors to develop their skills or undertake educational projects.
The post holder accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant in consultation where practical and with his/her colleagues, both senior and junior. Whilst juniors must accept that they will perform such duties, such additional commitments arising would be exceptional and short lived., This is an innovative post working in one of our established Same Day Emergency Care units within the Medicine & Integrated Care Division at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The job is available at St Mary's Hospital. The role will involve taking a lead in the assessment and treatment of patients allocated to Same Day Emergency Care. These patients are streamed primarily from the Emergency Department, our Urgent Treatment Centres, Acute Medicine or via GP referrals. This role will be an opportunity for a post core training equivalent doctor to be involved in seeing and treating our patient while also being given the opportunity to support the clinical lead to develop and expand the service.
The post holder will benefit from strong clinical Consultant support and mentorship to aide career progression and membership exams where necessary. It is hoped that this support and clinical exposure will enable candidates to successfully apply for a Deanery training post or prepare for a CESR programme for equivalence of training. There are additional opportunities at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust including leadership, academic and educational support.
The post holder may wish to combine shifts in the emergency department (adult or children's') with the SDEC experience, depending on previous experience and career ambition. These discussions and arrangements are on an individual basis after starting.
The work of the department
The SDEC hub is based in a newly developed area on the ground floor of the Paterson building at St Mary's Hospital. It has a separate waiting and reception areas with multiple consulting and assessment rooms, a procedure room, 8 reclining chairs and a bay containing 3 trolleys.
The SDEC unit is run by the directorate of urgent and emergency medicine. There is a ED consultant 5 days a week 8-1700 who supports the clinical staff in SDEC. Acute medicine, Neurology and other specialties are also present in the SDEC during the day.
The Emergency department is in the adjacent building and the two services are run in conjunction with each other and the Urgent Treatment Centre to provide optimal patient experience and flow through the Urgent and Emergency Care pathways.
