    Time

    Mostly outside office hours Estimate of time needed:
    0-5 hours / month 6 x 2.5 hr board meetings PA held early evening + preparation time & flexible contribution to the development of projects/policies and business plan., As a trustee you will be responsible for leading the charity and ensuring that Shantona;
  • carries out its purposes for the public benefit,

  • complies with our governing document and the law,

  • and manages our resources responsibly.

  • Trustees must act in the charity's best interests,

  • act with reasonable care and skill

  • and ensure that the charity is accountable.


  • We particularly want to strengthen our board with people who can contribute in the following areas:
  • Insight into the issues faced by disadvantaged and BAME communities (including young people),

  • experience/expertise in business/third sector management and HR.

  • understand legislation affecting charities,

  • ICT opportunities and challenges,

  • income generation through social enterprise.


  • We hold 6 Board meetings a year (currently 5-7 pm on Tuesdays and have an annual awayday for trustees and staff. Trustees also participate in small staff/trustee task groups, in senior staff recruitment and occasional attendance at events. We pay travel and out of pocket expenses for all our volunteers.

    What are we looking for?

    We welcome people from all expertise but preferably who have previous experience on being on a board of trustees. Some of the skills talents and experience which we feel are vital for our trustees to fulfil their roles to help move the organisation forward are;

  • What difference will you make?

    Responding to this opportunity will strengthen and widen the skills of existing board members, enabling the board to meet the needs of Shantona beneficiaries more effectively and building capacity. New board members will help the organisation to become more sustainable in the long term. Additional capacity of new board members will bring fresh ideas, different perspectives and challenge our existing ways of doing things, ensuring that the organisation stays responsive and innovative.

    Shantona Women and Family Services is seeking members from a diverse range of skills, backgrounds and knowledge to join our board of volunteer trustees., Based in Harehills, Shantona, a registered charity, has worked with women and families from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds in disadvantaged areas of Leeds for the last 26 years. Shantona is a vibrant organisation with 20+staff and volunteers tackling domestic abuse, promoting healthy relationships, addressing young people's issues and promoting community cohesion.
