Full Job Description

  • The Unit Manager will report to the Head of Production and will maintain production management responsibilities across 1 or 2 hubs and line manage the production co-ordinators within those.

  • In addition to this, the Unit Manager will take on these additional roles and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for scheduling editorial staff at all levels across the Consumer, Culture Arts & Music and Worship hubs to minimise downtime, responding to the ebb and flow of the TX schedule and the development needs of staff.

  • To have a detailed overview of the staff schedule across the 3 hubs and to work in partnership with the PE to flex staffing across the wider BBC Audio group.

  • Joint responsibility and accountability with the Head and Editors for maintaining freelancer spend at all levels within financial targets, and ensuring all those working for the department are employed within the correct &appropriate contractual framework

  • To work in partnership with the Operations Teams within BBC Audio to ensure that productions are delivered in the most efficient way whilst never compromising business and safety requirements

  • Work in partnership with the Heads, Editors, BBC Audio Management team and key stakeholders on the Salford site to develop and support Diversity and Inclusivity in both on and off-air roles

  • Work with the Head, PE, Head of Business and Editors to initiate ways to train and develop all editorial and production management staff in response to their personal development plans and the strategic direction of BBC Audio - taking specific responsibility to deliver the practical elements of this.

  • In partnership with the Head and Production Executive to take shared responsibility for safety issues across BBC Audio North output and site.

  • To play a lead role in certain projects and activities, including, but not exclusively Contains Strong Language

  • To support the Production Executive in managing the financial overview of the entire Salford slate.

    Extensive production management and business planning experience

  • Demonstrable experience of leading and managing production management teams

  • Experience of the strategic planning and scheduling of production staff at all levels across a portfolio of output

  • Proven negotiation skills with both internal and external stakeholders

  • Knowledge of market and BBC Corporate trends and their impact on BBC Audio

    BBC Audio North is the single biggest supplier of BBC radio programmes and podcasts made outside of London. We love audio and make lots of it - a rich mix of content spanning multiple genres including consumer, investigations, documentaries, religion and arts for national BBC Radio, the World Service and Sounds.


  • Based at MediaCity UK in Salford, the department produces content for Radio 3, 4, 6 Music, BBC Sounds and the World Service. Our programmes are an eclectic mix including Religion Worship and Factual programmes such as Sunday Worship, Thought For The Day, The Daily Service, Sunday, Moral Maze, Beyond Belief and Heart and Soul for the World Service. Our Consumer hub produces You and Yours, In Touch and the highly successful Radio 4/podcast series Sliced Bread. Our arts and documentaries hub produces Loose Ends, The Verb, Pick of the World as well numerous documentaries for Radio 4 and the World Service. The Radio 3 programmes we produce here are wide-ranging. They include Weekend Breakfast, Classical Live, Sound of Cinema, Sound of Gaming, a whole range of live and pre-recorded broadcast concerts, the Early Music Show, Choral Evensong and mixes for BBC Sounds.

    Salary: £45,710 - £55,710 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
