Full Job Description

We are looking for a Virology/Molecular Service Manager to support our Microbiology laboratory at Cambridge. The Microbiology laboratory at Cambridge current provides services to Addenbrooke's, Royal Papworth, and the E&N Herts Hospitals, the surrounding district, and other NHS Laboratories. It has active research and epidemiological interests. The laboratory undergoes assessment against UKAS ISO 15189 standards and has strong teaching interests. Set on the outskirts of the university city of Cambridge, Addenbrooke's Hospital is one of the top hospitals in the UK and a thriving NHS Foundation Trust. Addenbrooke's is closely associated with leading educational providers including the University of Cambridge and is a major centre for biomedical research and education. The department undertakes a wide range of routine and specialist microbiological and molecular investigations. It makes extensive use of automation including Qiagen platforms, Biofire, BacTec, Sedimax, MGIT, Vitek, Centaur XP, Panther, Liaison and Vidas analysers and Kiestra.,

  • Maintain professional competence and be aware of relevant developments in microbiology and other biomedical sciences.
  • Ensures that the provision of an efficient, effective and timely Virology and Molecular service is maintained
  • Lead in the evaluation and assessment of new equipment and consumable items in the Virology/Molecular service.
  • Participate in the management of the 24/7 service of the laboratory.
  • Manage the epidemiological activity within Virology/Molecular service.
  • Manage the safety of all staff in the Virology and Molecular departments including visitors to the laboratory.
  • Implementation of UKHSA health and safety policies and procedures in maintaining a safe working environment
  • Participate in production of risk assessments for all new and existing work and ensuring that control measures are implemented
  • Compliance with procedures to correct data entry errors
  • Take lead role in staff deployment within the Virology & Molecular departments including management of leave requests, absences, discipline and staffing levels.
  • Ensure staff within the Virology & Molecular departments are competent to carry out the tasks given to them and that they are appropriately supervised
  • Manage the monitoring and maintenance of laboratory equipment within the Virology and Molecular department, in liaison with the Laboratory Equipment Officer.
