Full Job Description

The School of Architecture and Design is committed to supporting a rich diversity culture that reflects our local communities and student body. Therefore, we are actively seeking candidates from black, brown, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds and women.

Posts are a part-time, fixed term contract. Sessions are generally timetabled once a week during term time and it is essential to be able to adhere to this commitment.

Selected candidates should note that payment will be made directly to them and cannot be made via a practice or company.

There will be a strong emphasis on teaching drawing, model making, digital and physical craft as well as delivering skills in communication, presentation, and professionalism. Delivering skills is essential alongside guiding the development of the students' design projects. You should therefore have excellent design, communication and interpersonal skills and a genuine passion for teaching. You will also be invited to bring new techniques / skills to the team as part of the collaborative working environment we encourage.

Your role will involve you interacting with students in one-to-one/group tutorials, workshop or design seminars, formal reviews and all module assessment points. Under the guidance of academic staff, students are expected to develop thought-provoking, considerate, well-crafted and inspiring design outputs. The successful candidate shall work collaboratively with the Module Leader and Course Director to ensure students achieve ambitious final assignments.

You must hold a relevant qualification, at PG level for architecture and all PG courses. A rich professional experience with technical proficiency in design, potentially across a number of creative disciplines, is desirable. Experience of teaching design in Higher Education is desirable, or if the candidate works primarily in professional practice, evidence of coordinating group activities in a creative endeavour will also be considered. We will welcome applicants with experience in progressive initiatives to encourage design participation for diverse communities.

Birmingham School of Architecture & Design is a creative, diverse and interdisciplinary community of students, staff and practitioners exploring sustainable and inclusive design with our city, region and beyond. We believe design has the power to create transformational change. Through our teaching, research, and strong connections to industry we empower our students to create ideas and actions to radically change the way we live, now and into the future.

We are seeking outstanding and inspiring candidates to teach on our courses in, landscape architecture, architecture, and interior architecture and design at undergraduate and postgraduate level for the forthcoming academic year. The positions available are mostly for visiting tutors for Design Studio. Since this portal is part of a rolling application process, you may only hear back at points in the year where we are actively recruiting to the team.

In applying for this vacancy, you will be submitting your details to a Visiting Lecturer recruitment pool. Please note that Visiting Lecturer posts are part time, fixed term contracts for which a specific amount of hours work will be agreed between you and the Faculty. Visiting Lecturer posts are paid hourly and there are a range of pay rates dependant on the role.
