Full Job Description

The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the historic heart of Portsmouth. We are very much a family school known for excellent teaching, superb pastoral care and wide-ranging co-curricular opportunities and offer an education across the age range from Pre-School to Sixth Form.

We are looking for an inspiring and energetic drum teacher to join our talented and experienced team of instrumental teachers from January 2025. The successful applicant will be required to teach 1:1 lessons for pupils learning drum kit and ideally assist with the percussion section of our highly successful ensemble 'PGS Brass', this can be discussed at interview.

There is initially a requirement for 4.5 hours of teaching consisting of 9 individual lessons of 30 minutes duration each. Teaching is required in both the Senior Department and Junior Department from beginner to advanced level.

Genuine enthusiasm for enabling each individual pupil to achieve their potential (at all levels) is essential.

Instrumental teachers are self-employed and sign a consultancy agreement with the school in addition to a support staff contract.

There is an expectation that Visiting Music Teachers at PGS attend INSET (Professional Development Day) training, for example, in Safeguarding, GDPR and Health and Safety and other essential training as scheduled at other times throughout the year.

How to apply:

Candidates may apply through our school website or via the online form linked to our advert on www.tes.com

The closing date is midday on Tuesday 1st October 2024 and interviews will be scheduled to take place on the school site as soon as possible thereafter and will include an observed lesson. The planned interview date is Wednesday 9th October 2024.

Informal enquiries to the Director of Music, Mr Alex Goodwin, are welcome at a.goodwin@pgs.org.uk

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The School may carry out online searches on shortlisted applicants and applicants may be required to provide details of their online profile, including social media account names/handles, as part of their application.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
