Full Job Description

We are looking for a keen and dynamic ward manager who has a passion for providing high quality patient centred care on our Emergency floor. It is essential that you have experience working within an acute Emergency floor/admissions unit. The role includes working days, nights, weekend and bank holidays to ensure the service is covered.
The Emergency Floor is a 67 bedded area and also includes and ambulatory care area. The EF provides acute care for patients with Medical, Surgical and Frail Elderly needs in one area. We have strong nursing leadership in place that consists of a dedicated Band 8 Matron, highly skilled Band 7 department managers, as well as 2 dedicated clinical educators and a team of deputy ward managers. We work closely with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure our patients receive the very best care possible.
We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses., As a ward manager you will be coordinating the flow from AE and other sources into the EF as well as facilitating discharges.
You will ensure that the EF provides excellent standards of nursing care to maintain patient safety. You will act as a role model at all times. Be motivated and lead your team effectively.
You must work well under pressure and you will be expected to communicate closely with other members of the MDT. You will be responsible for managing a team of nurses and HCA 's which will include sickness management , appraisals and other HR processes. As the ward manager you will be involved in dealing with PALS concerns/ complaints as they arise and also managing conflict.
To have continuing 24 hour responsibility for the effective management of the Emergency Floor (EF).
In addition the post holder will provide nursing leadership within the department, ensuring an effective quality nursing service, with responsibility for standards of nursing care and patient safety., + Act as a role model and ensure effective staff supervision with clinical practice, working with staff and patients in an advisory, teaching and support capacity and maintaining professional competence, authority and credibility.
+ Work collaboratively with clinical nursing experts including Heads of Nursing, Clinical Teams, Consultant Nurses, Nurse Specialists and Practice Development Nurses in the development of expert, personal centred practice.
+ Be able to develop, motivate and lead a team by using objectives in line with department, sub specialty and corporate goals
+ Provide professional leadership within the department ensuring that all staff use evidence based practise and adhere to the NMC code of professional conduct
+ Be able to demonstrate a high degree of motivation and innovation.
+ Communicate effectively with the department team ensuring that there is a monthly team meeting and ensure robust systems exist so that staff feel informed.
+ To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the teams in which he/she works.
+ Work with PALS to ensure that areas of concern are addressed effectively.
+ Be able to work in a multi-professional environment ensuring most effective use of all members of those professional teams.
+ Display strong leadership and positivity to the department team during times of increased pressure on resources, staffing crises, or bed pressures, working with divisional leads to assess risks across the division and how these can be minimised.
+ Demonstrate a logical, flexible and innovative approach to problem solving.

You will gain experience in caring for patients with many different conditions that are covered by surgical and medical presentations. We also have patients who have complex needs and may be receiving Opti flow, Non invasive ventilation or having cardiac monitoring.
We also plan to open a new SDEC area within the Emergency Floor soon which will add extra learning and opportunities
The role will provide the successful applicant with an array of learning opportunities that occur either in house as well as formally at either the University of Surrey or the University of Brighton.
