Full Job Description

We are looking for two Waste Project Assistants to help deliver waste/recycling related projects and trials in the London borough of Wandsworth and to help complete recent work on improving Richmond's Community Toilet Scheme.You will help to deliver our climate and environment related action plans by helping to reduce waste, increase re-use and improve the delivery of recycling services along with related performance.

You will also be required to travel to locations around the borough regularly to conduct site visits, deliver public engagement activities and to meet with stakeholders.This may also involve early morning site visits to monitor levels of participation in recycling services.

Home working is permitted subject to operational requirements and in accordance with Council policies, and equipment will be provided to enable this.

These roles are fixed-term contracts for one year and you will be part of a small but friendly waste team within a large workforce, most of which serves both Richmond and Wandsworth Councils.

Objective of the role

Improving recycling and waste collection service performance on Council managed housing estates in Wandsworth.

Supporting the roll-out of weekly collection services for recycling household food waste across Wandsworth.

Completingrecent efforts to improve Richmond's Community Toilets Scheme to improve coverage including baby change and wheelchair accessible facilities.(This is envisaged to involve the equivalent of 3 months full time work that may be spread over a longer period and will be allocated to a single post holder.)

About the roles
1. Estates waste/recycling service improvement (Wandsworth):The post holders will support the delivery of rubbish and recycling service improvements designed to increase recycling performance and reduce litter and fly-tipping on council managed housing estates.This will involve helping to identify, deliver, and monitor improvements including container capacities, appearance, locations and associated communications with residents to improve their engagement with recycling services and reduce bin overflows.
2. Weekly food recycling collection service roll-out (Wandsworth):The post holders will support the roll-out of weekly food waste recycling collection services to all households across the Borough.In particular, this will involve site visits and liaising with property management agents to agree suitable locations for food recycling containers to be installed in communal and accessible ground level locations.
3. Community Toilet Scheme Improvement (Richmond):The post holder will complete the improvement work undertaken by the previous post holder.This will include recruiting new businesses to the scheme and promoting it to residents and visitors to the borough,
4. Other projects, outreach and engagement designed to help improve recycling performance and/or otherwise improve environmental performance (both boroughs):The post holders are likely to help deliver other projects that haven't yet been defined and will help to deliver outreach and engagement e.g. at public events and/or schools.

The post holders will support each other as well as other post holders in similar roles that have already been recruited.They will work according to local delivery priorities at the time and will be subject to the limitations on cross-borough working listed above.

In addition to the above, the post holders will:

Support the delivery of other services/projects designed to improve recycling performance and/or reduce the carbon impacts associated with managing local authority collected waste.

Support the delivery of improved recycling performance from existing services e.g. through assisting with related communications and engagement.

Plan and prioritise their own workload to assist in delivering projects within defined timescales.

Liaise with relevant stakeholders including tenants and residents' associations, property management agents, officers, waste disposal authorities, and contractors as well as local businesses to ensure smooth delivery of the projects.

Develop and maintain large datasets including address data, contact details and proposals.

Attend outreach events to promote recycling services through engagement with local residents.

Assist with monitoring the performance of waste services and projects.

Knowledge of local authority waste and recycling services, procedures and techniques.

Managing data-You should have experience of developing and maintaining large datasets.

Communication skills-You should have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Client engagement-You should have experience of effective engagement with community groups, property managers, small businesses and other stakeholders

Site Visits-You must have a clean full UK driving licence and/or be able to travel to sites borough wide on a regular basis.
