Full Job Description

SZC is ultimately owned by two shareholders, EDF and HMG. The shareholders hold their investment in SZC through NNB Holdings Company (SZC) Limited. Over the course of the current shareholding arrangements the shareholdings of the two shareholders will change. The shareholders will fund SZC up until Financial Close through equity in line with the approved schedule and budget. SZC's business is to design, finance, construct, commission, operate, maintain, and eventually decommission the nuclear power plant and related infrastructure (including activities relating to hydrogen, direct air capture and/or desalination) at Sizewell C in Suffolk. The principal objectives of the current development phase of the SZC project are to agree and implement the Capital Raise Plan, including completing an equity and debt raise, agree the core supply chain contracts and obtain the regulatory permits and licences required for the construction phase of the Project (including the core environmental permits and nuclear site licence). Prior to the government investment decision SZC operated as part of EDF in the Nuclear Development business unit and was staffed by EDF colleagues and independent contractors who are now in the process of transferring to the direct employment of SZC. It is setting itself up as an organisation capable of delivering a new nuclear power plant, from investment case and funding, to construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance and decommissioning. The SZC construction programme has a technical and commercial business case predicated on technical replication of Hinkley Point C. EDF will be an important supplier of nuclear capability for the SZC Programme from its established nuclear business footprint in the UK. Key stakeholders are UK Government, relevant Government departments and agencies including Treasury BEIS, EDF, Financial investors and institutions, Regulators, Alliance partners and local communities. What you'll be doing The Civil Works Alliance has an exciting opportunity for a Waste & Resources Manager on the Sizewell C (SZC) project to provide support and advice to operational teams by leading on waste reporting and initiatives. Liaise with SZC topic leads and ensure required reporting into the SZC platform in a timely manner. Responsible for assurance and overseeing compliance of construction works with SZC works information, legal requirements and any undertakings & assurances relevant to waste & resources management. Co-ordinate provision of information from construction teams and sub-contractors to SZC. Provide advice and guidance to site environmental teams on construction waste issues and incident/complaint investigations. Own the Site Waste Management Plan and processes. Provide support to BREEAM and construction environmental minimum requirements compliance processes on waste.

  • Fully understands the legal and Client requirements/conditions of contract, as they relate to waste and resource management issues and advises the project teams on these.
  • Work with construction teams to effectively and innovatively manage waste on site.
  • Produce, review and update the Waste and Resource Management Plans as required.
  • Collaborates with client, designer and third parties, working to share best practice within the SZC scheme and wider industry.
  • Play a leading role in reuse/waste minimisation and circular enconomy initiatives.
  • Provide specialist support to the consents team on all waste consenting activities including attending meetings with the client. Provide specialist support to construction teams, advising on matters related to waste management, interpretation of analysis results, treatment, reuse and other strategies to reduce waste outputs and meet waste minimization targets.
  • Provide specialism support to the commercial team for any scope changes, early warnings or other formal communications required with the client on waste and material matters.
  • Support the Environmental and Sustainability upskilling and development of the project teams, assisting in the identification of site Environmental and Sustainability training needs.
  • Promote Environmental and Sustainability initiatives and innovations.
  • Develop and manage solutions to meet the project's Key Performance Indicator (KPI) targets and promote activities to drive improvement.
  • Provide regular updates to the Delivery Leadership Team against the project's KPI targets.
  • Conduct compliance inspections, visits and joint tours
  • Responsible for local audit programme and DCO compliance
  • Share learnings and contribute to the continuous improvement of the environment team, site supervisors and project managers via communities of practice.

    Member of an appropriate environmental professional body.
  • A sound understanding of waste management and sustainable use of materials, waste and wider environmental legislation and dealing with contractors, EA and statutory authorities.
  • Experience of managing waste risks and their impacts in terms of time costs and reputation.
  • Understanding of the benefits of working collaboratively to obtain the best outcome for the project
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Determination to see tasks through to completion, with excellent planning and organisation skills.

  • Good experience of managing a variety of environmental issues on complex projects within the construction sector.
  • Experience of co-ordinating the work of others.
