Job Advert: Watch Commander - Operational Risk (Temporary 18-month position)
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is seeking a dedicated individual to fulfill the role of Watch Commander - Operational Risk on a temporary basis for 18 months.
Salary: This role offers a salary reflective of Watch Commander B, plus a 10% day worker allowance. If you are not yet a competent Watch Commander, your pay will start on a development basis until competency is achieved, in accordance with National Joint Council terms. The additional 10% allowance reflects the specialist nature of the role, the requirement for flexible working, and maintaining operational competence, including fitness.

As the Watch Commander for Operational Risk, you will lead and support teams to gather risk information for various property types, ensuring compliance with legal standards. Your responsibilities will include planning visits and training operational personnel to collect risk information under the powers of the Fire Services Act 2004, Section 7(ii)(d).

Location: The role is based at Woodhatch, Reigate, Surrey but offers flexibility as you will work with operational crews across Surrey.
You will be supported by an experienced team comprising both operational and civilian professionals. This role provides an opportunity to gain specialist and technical knowledge in fire safety, under the guidance of a Fire Safety Manager.
Role Overview:
In this role, you will engage with partners and business owners to gather and share risk information, supporting the resolution of operational incidents. You will educate businesses and fire teams to ensure a shared understanding of risks and work independently to manage your calendar with guidance from your manager on prioritising workloads.
A typical day will involve assessing risks and hazards related to firefighting operations, understanding protective measures for people and premises, and influencing operational crews' understanding of Surrey's risk profile.,

  • Work effectively with technology, demonstrating proficiency with basic software and IT equipment.

  • Lead and support teams in completing records such as Site Specific Risk Information (SSRI), Operational Pre-Plans, and Operational Response Plans.

  • Maintain a reasonable level of physical fitness and mobility as the role requires inspecting multiple building areas, often carrying equipment.

    Proven experience in leading and managing a diverse team to deliver effective service.

  • Experience managing changing priorities and situations.

  • Experience in gathering risk information and using data storage systems.

  • Effective communication skills, demonstrating professionalism with the public, partner agencies, and other service providers.

  • Proven ability to lead, engage, and motivate others within and outside the Fire Service.

  • Experience in applying relevant information to make decisions that reflect key priorities.
