Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Stockport Council Economy, Work and Skills Service to be part of a new team approach to Work and Skills support. The Work and Skills Navigator will play a crucial role in supporting Stockport residents and employers to navigate the complexities of the work and skills ecosystem to ensure they access the right support for their particular circumstances. The primary goal is to assist engagement and positive work and skills outcomes, for residents and employers, through acting as a community based 'single point of contact', providing a 'triage' type service.

Experience in employment support, adult education, or a related sector would be an advantage in working in these roles. However, in particular we are looking for people who have:

  • Strong understanding of the challenges faced by individuals in low-income or insecure employment, or with a health condition, and have a commitment to social inclusion.
  • Experience in identifying and securing appropriate support for an individual.
  • Knowledge of the local labour market and experience engaging with individuals and employers.
  • An ability to work collaboratively with a range of partners and services to provide holistic person centred support, including a strong understanding of the range of work, skills, health and wellbeing services that could be utilised.
  • Empathy, patience, and commitment to supporting individuals in achieving their full potential.

Stockport is enjoying an exciting period of regeneration, seeing new developments and investment taking place, with Stockport Council a leading player in this. Stockport Council wants to ensure that as many of our residents as possible benefit from this economic growth, which is underpinned by the Stockport Economic Plan, setting out ambitions to 2030.
  • Economy, Work & Skills is a unique service within Stockport Council in that it combines support for residents and employers to grow local skills and economic prosperity. To support this, Stockport Council has received funding from Greater Manchester partners to enhance its offer, enabling us to provide a Work & Skills 'triage' service to act as a first contact point for accessing Work & Skills support. Stockport Council has an attractive Employee Benefits scheme, including access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, flexible and hybrid working and an extensive employee discounts programme, and access to health and wellbeing services. At Stockport Council we are one ambitious team on a mission to create opportunities for everyone who lives, works and spends time in the borough. Working at Stockport Council means contributing to one of the most thriving towns in the North. We're keen to recruit people with the right values and behaviours that can help us ensure our workplace values are at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to be recognised under the Good Employment Charter as an organisation committed to the wellbeing of our colleagues. As members of the charter, we have been recognised as a great place to work for all colleagues and pledge to pay the real living wage, engage staff in key decisions and endorse fair and flexible working conditions.

The successful applicant's appointment will be subject to satisfactory pre-employment clearances including a Disclosure and Barring Service check. Stockport Council holds a Visa sponsorship licence but this can only be used for certain roles and this campaign does not qualify. Please note that we have made a commitment to improve the employment opportunities for people with disabilities, care leavers and ex-military personnel. As part of the Guaranteed Assessment Scheme you will therefore be guaranteed an interview if you meet both the criteria for the scheme and the essential job role criteria. Find out if you meet the criteria here: https://www.greater.jobs/our-guaranteed-assessment-scheme Privacy Notice Stockport Council is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive workforce culture - a place where we can all be ourselves and succeed. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities to join our workforce. We want our employees to have a good work life balance and in many job roles we can offer a range of flexible/hybrid working arrangements. We also have inclusive employment policies and staff engagement forums to support our diverse workforce. We will listen to, learn from, and develop our workforce.
