Are you passionate about health, safety, and the environment? Do you have the expertise to drive positive cultural and behavioural changes in a dynamic industry? If so, we want you to join our team at Network Rail’s Southern Region as a Workforce Health, Safety & Environment Advisor!

As a key member of our team based at London Blackfriars, you’ll be at the forefront of promoting and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards across the Southern Region. Your role will involve working closely with the Regional HSE Team reporting to the Head of Workforce Safety, providing expert advice, monitoring compliance, and fostering a culture of safety and environmental responsibility.

A key part of this role is to engage with and manage our team of expert Safety Coaches who undertake our level 2 Assurance Activity and assist the Region with its Track Worker Safety Programme.,

  • Advisory Support: Offer guidance to the Head of Workforce Safety on workforce health, safety, and environmental matters focussing on the Safety Coach Findings.

  • Data Management: Assist in the collation and analysis of health, safety, and environmental data and present these findings.

  • Compliance Monitoring: Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environment management systems.

  • Safety Programmes: Support the implementation of regional safety improvement initiatives and lead designated activities.

  • Safety Tours: Organize and monitor safety tours and staff surveillance.

  • Risk Management: Identify key risks, recommend control measures, and contribute to the development of safety strategies with the data and information supplied by the Safety Coaches.

  • Non-Conformance Reporting: Monitor and report on the progress of closing out non-conformance reports and audit actions.

    In-depth knowledge of Network Rail Health and Safety Management System.

  • Familiarity with Network Rail Environment Management System.

  • Understanding of maintenance processes and techniques.

  • Expertise in investigation processes and techniques.

  • NEBOSH Diploma or an equivalent recognised qualification.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.


  • Desirable:
  • Knowledge of the operational railway environment.

  • Institute of Environmental Management Award (IEMA).

  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
