Full Job Description

As an Industrial Placement within the Wales & Western region you will spend some time supporting both Signalling Project Engineering functions and Engineering Assurance. You will be exposed to projects ranging from historic freight and branch lines, to our state-of-the-art signalling centre, this is an opportunity to put your engineering skills into practice in an environment where modern technology meets Victorian engineering, 1. Support the implementation of Network Rail systems and procedures to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to design, construction, commissioning and other technical activities on relevant projects, compliant with all relevant legislation.

2. Assist the Engineer to deliver Projects to the standards and specification of Network Rail. Ensure allocated design and construction contracts include reference to and are compliant with appropriate Railway Group and Network Rail Company standards, formal specifications and procedures.

3. Maintain the use of relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to allocated projects and manage the environmental aspects of allocated projects in accordance with Network Rail’s environmental policy.

4. Provide project management advice in respect of all construction activities, including testing and commissioning and site supervision. Manage the design and/or construction elements of relevant projects meet the requirements of current legislation, including construction design management (CDM) regulations.

5. Undertake reviews of design and/or construction activities. Arrange audits of contractors monitoring safety, environment and quality of design, construction, testing and commissioning and management systems is adequate.

6. Identify and share best practice across the various project teams.

7. Provide engineering support and participate in investigations of incidents relating to assets.

8. Monitor the technical development of projects, ascertaining that renewal requirements are sufficient, correctly interpreted and any changes are agreed. Assist with the approval in principle of designs and support acceptance of detailed design certification.

9. Provide specialist advice to teams developing signalling layouts across all functions within Infrastructure investment and Asset management.

10. Support the minor scheme plan sign-off process for the region.

11. Monitor for consistency in the application of risk ID and evaluation methods (e.g. HAZOP, QRA, LRM, and the GK/RT/14200 suite), as suitable to evaluate and compare options.

12. Review risk analysis of schemes in development and provide functional direction to the teams.

13. Provide specialist advice resource so that all detailed engineering and development activities, result in schemes that are affordable, meet programme requirements in a safe & environmentally responsible manner and are delivered to time, cost and quality.

· Working towards an engineering bachelor’s degree.

· Good communication skills.

Salary: £19,838 per annum. This is a year in industry placement as part of working towards a bachelor degree. This a 12 month fixed term contract
