Full Job Description

The post holder will be part of the inter-disciplinary Youth Justice Service that provides community and through care services to children and young people who are involved in the criminal justice process. These posts will provide a 'bank' of workers who are able to provide support to the permanent staff team of the YJS by providing a level of flexibility to the Service. These roles may be of interest to candidates who are interested in working with children and young people outside of full time employment and may suit retired / semi-retired people or students., You will be required to represent the service and children & young people across a variety of settings and activities. Access to transport for work purposes is essential, as is the ability to liaise and work co-operatively with other agencies/professionals. A proportion of the work will be required during the weekends and evenings, as well as during the core working week. Key roles and responsibilities:

  • To engage, motivate and support children and young people either on a 1:1 or group basis covering the following activities:
  • Reparation - Assist the Reparation Co-ordinator in delivering a range of reparation activities outdoors and indoors that focus on the child or young person providing a visible contribution to the local community where they reside
  • Sports mentoring / activities -Assisting and supporting children and young people to engage in diversionary activities, outward bound activities or residential trips.
  • Other skills e.g craft, horticulture, trades.
  • Restorative Justice interventions
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with children and young people throughout the period of working with them.
  • Ensure that equipment is safe and fit for purpose and that defects are reported to YJS management immediately.
  • Ensure that policies relating to the use of equipment and vehicles are strictly adhered to.
  • Attend and actively contribute to core induction, training and related events.

    To be considered for this position, you should meet the following requirements:
  • Previous or current knowledge of youth crime issues and/or national standards in the Youth Justice Service is desirable. Evidence of higher education within a criminal justice discipline, Social Work or Youth Work setting would be desirable. Ideally, you will have some practical criminal justice experience of working with children and young people, either in a social work, education or youth work setting. Alternatively, evidence of higher education within a criminal justice discipline, Social Work or Youth Work setting would be desirable. Access to transport for work purposes is essential, as is the ability to liaise and work co-operatively with other agencies/professionals.
