Full Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and experienced nurses to join our unique alcohol care team as a band 6 alcohol specialist nurse. There are various hours available and the post is based at BHNFT.

The band 6 alcohol specialist nurse will work as part of the alcohol care team, which is part of the hospitals healthy lives team. The alcohol specialist nurse is an autonomous practitioner who undertakes specialist assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care for those who present with alcohol misuse and alcohol related illness. They will implement strategies which support a reduction in presentations, acute admissions and reduction in length of stay, as well as promoting recovery.

The successful candidates will work across the acute hospital trust, assessing patients who are referred to for brief interventions and advice, complex case management (including alcohol withdrawal syndrome), seizures and delirium tremens.

Delivering a holistic approach is paramount, considering the physical, mental and socioeconomic factors which each individual may require support with.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assess patients referred to the alcohol care team. Paying close attention to individuals already known to be frequent attenders who will require an MDT approach as discussed at the High Intensity User Group (HIUG) Providing expert advice where required, referral to existing services, focusing on facilitating care in the community where safe to do so.

The post holder will advise clinical staff on the management of patients experiencing alcohol withdrawal syndrome, seizures and delirium tremens, ensuring these are managed as per the Trust policy.

The post holder will work closely with other services internal and external to the Trust.

The post holder will deliver brief interventions to patients, encouraging referrals to community services/networks. Patients unable to access services will be integral to the ACT caseload.

The post holder will deputise for the Alcohol Lead Nurse where required and appropriate.

Actively contribute to the delivery of the alcohol care team by attending pathway development and meetings when required, supporting the Alcohol Lead Nurse as appropriate.

To utilise systems that are in place to keep patients safe and manage risk.
