Full Job Description

The successful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register., In relation to this post, this is a 10PA appointment for a Consultant in Infectious Diseases. The post will be based at St Jamess Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary & HIV outpatient service sites. The Infectious Diseases department (known as Infection & Travel Medicine) in Leeds is based on ward J20 within Gledhow Wing at St Jamess University Hospital and provides inpatient and outpatient services for the people of Leeds and surrounding areas. The 18 bed ward includes 14 isolation rooms (4 with negative pressure). The department provides a 7 day a week Infectious Diseases service to the West Yorkshire Region. There are approximately 750 admissions per annum which are nearly all non-elective. Patients are usually admitted from the Trusts A& E departments, and Medical Assessment Unit, but may be referred from other wards within the Trust and other hospitals within the region. The department also works collaboratively with the department of microbiology to provide a consults service for other departments in the Trust for diagnosis and management of bacteraemias and complex infections. Ward J20 acts as the Primary Treatment Centre for the West Yorkshire Regional HIV Network, and so takes admissions of HIV patients from around the region. It is also the regional centre for patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. The department provides significant outpatient activity in Infectious Diseases and HIV. There is a well-established OPAT service run in partnership with Leeds Community Health NHS Trust. Further detail of the service is provided at the end of the Job Description.

Applicants should have established skills in Infectious Diseasesand its related specialties including Microbiology, Virology, General (Internal) Medicine or Genitourinary Medicine. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research is desirable.,

  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology/ Virology/ General (Internal) Medicine or equivalent.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
  • Desirable
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops., MBChB/ MB BS or equivalent qualification.
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification.
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
  • YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE ROLE.

  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

    Required to fill this replacement post within the Infectious Diseases Department at the St Jamess University Hospital.
  • This is an exciting opportunity to join this dynamic department, in the vibrant city of Leeds. The successful candidate will become part of an enthusiastic and dedicated team of 7 consultants based at St. James University Hospital in the regional Specialist Infectious Diseases Centre. The Infectious Diseases department (known as Infection & Travel Medicine) is based on ward J20, which is an 18 bedded ward including 14 isolation rooms (4 with negative pressure). The department has approximately 750 admissions per annum and is a secondary care facility for Leeds, as well as the regional MDR-TB centre and the primary treatment centre for the West Yorkshire HIV network. A joint consults service is provided collaboratively with the departments of Microbiology and Virology, with regular complex infection MDTs as well as joint teaching and education events.
