- Access perks that keep you supported both inside and outside the office, Abbott's Diabetes Care site in Witney have an exciting opportunity for a Student Development Engineer to join our on-site Research & Development team for an approximately 12-month internship (starting summer 2025).

Our Diabetes Care division is part of the Medical Devices group, and it is here that we design, develop, and manufacture leading-edge blood glucose monitoring systems, including our revolutionary Freestyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System, which is used by patients and healthcare professionals for the day-to-day management of diabetes. The system consists of a hand-held meter or smartphone app, and disposable test strips or on-body patch containing a sensor. The meters are developed in Alameda, California, and the strips and sensors developed and manufactured in the UK, at Witney, near Oxford.

The projects that are envisaged include:

- Design of proto-type and proof of principle machines and test fixtures.

- Characterisation and development of machinery and test equipment.

- Development of next generation sensor devices and processes.

The R&D Department has several ongoing projects, into which the student will be expected to contribute, as well as being assigned a specific project to own. The day to day activities of the R&D group vary depending on the nature of the project assigned but typically include design of equipment and jigs, production of detailed drawings, overseeing fabrication, equipment assembly, experimental testing, data analysis, problem solving and report writing. Students will also be required to present their results within the project team, and in some cases to the rest of the department. There will also be regular interactions with other departments including Scientists, Electronics, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs.

The student will receive full Health and Safety training in accordance with company policy. They will be expected to adhere to Health and Safety policy at all times. To fulfil job requirements, full training where required will be provided. The students will be expected to work 37.5 hours a week, although some extra work may be required to meet specific deadlines.

The projects would suit students studying a Mechanical Engineering based bachelors-level degree with an interest in manufacturing equipment design and build in a regulated, high volume environment.

We're looking for someone who is passionate around STEM, and keen to pursue their career in the Medical Devices sector. You will be able to demonstrate strong skills in communication, time management, innovation, and team work.
