Full Job Description
We are recruiting for an enthusiastic and dedicated Radioactive Waste Management Specialist to work within the EDF Radioactive Waste Management group (part of the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality function). This team maintains radioactive waste governance, undertakes oversight and provides assurance to the business. The role provides key technical and specialist advice to all EDF nuclear sites within the UK, supporting operations, decommissioning and new build. The position offers an opportunity for personal development through the broadening of knowledge and experience in radioactive waste management, as well as allowing the successful candidate the opportunity to make a personal contribution to the UK radioactive waste sector. You can be based anywhere in the UK, however you will be required to travel to Gloucester once a month as needed. Part-time or flexible working arrangements could be an option for the right candidate., Reporting to the Radioactive Waste Management Group Head, you will be part of a dynamic and diverse team who have a range of experiences in radioactive waste management, related topics and the wider nuclear industry. As a member of this energetic team, you will develop the scope, lead and direct specific work packages to ensure compliance and drive excellence in the field of radioactive waste management. This role supports sites in discharging Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) legal obligations and relevant Nuclear Site Licence Conditions, providing technical specialist support and managing challenging projects. The role holder will:
- Develop, lead and implement radioactive waste governance arrangements that drive fleet performance improvement;
- Identify areas of targeted radioactive waste oversight, provide insight and support the wider oversight programme across the fleet;
- Manage contracts for waste management and consultancy services;
- Support or develop radioactive waste strategies that provide operational and decommissioning benefit whilst minimising risk and cost;
- Be responsible for developing strategic BAT / BPM assessment methodologies and lead their completion;
- Provide technical support across the business in the areas of Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) and Nuclear Site Licence Conditions;
- Develop and implement coherent and sustainable strategies for fleet wide knowledge and expertise within radioactive waste. There may be future opportunities to get involved with other technical areas within the Environmental Safety and Sustainability Branch and/or wider improvement initiatives to support your longer-term development.

If you're looking for an exciting new opportunity to work and make a difference during a crucial period of change, this position may be for you!, For this role, you will need a HNC or equivalent as a minimum, ideally in a relevant scientific, technical or engineering subject and experience in leading radioactive projects, oversight or performance improvement activities. Development towards becoming a Radioactive Waste Advisor (RWA) is encouraged. Relevant chartered status is desirable. You will have an understanding of policy and regulatory requirements relating to the management of solid radioactive waste in the UK and experience in the processes used to ensure that nuclear practices are optimised and justified to minimise risks to the public and the environment. You'll be able to understand and have experience in the use of existing Lower Activity Waste processing and disposal practises and/or be familiar with the requirements for management of Higher Activity Wastes. A broad understanding of radioactive waste management outside of EDF and a proven ability to identify, and implement, best practice are desirable attributes. Ideally you will be able to demonstrate a bias for action with a proven track record in managing stakeholders' expectations, experience in the specification, delivery and oversight of technical work from suppliers and have an exceptional safety and quality management focus. You'll have excellent critical analytical skills with the ability to assimilate technical information and make sound judgements, alongside clear, concise communication skills and good interpersonal skills. You'll need to demonstrate how you build effective relationships with and influence different stakeholders, such as: stations; other departments; external suppliers; and regulators. The ability to challenge in a constructive manner is key.
