Full Job Description

The Head of Group Logistics Procurement role, reporting to the Group Procurement Director, works collaboratively with the Head of Group Logistics Operations, within the E2E Supply Chain Transformation team and is responsible for c.£600m spend across Warehousing, transportation & ocean freight across the packaging, paper & recycling divisions across Europe & NAPP. The Group Procurement Function is accountable for : Shaping and aligning the Procurement strategy to support the achievement of business goals including growth, ESG (inc Scope 3) and manufacturing excellence Partnering with stakeholders to ensuring the function competitively sources quality products and supplier services whilst maintaining and building strong relationships with strategic suppliers in line with group Innovation, ESG and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals Partnering differently across the value chain to create innovative business offerings that delight our customers and support business growth The Head of Group Logistics Procurement role, leads a team of category specialists and is accountable for developing talent, driving holistic value and cost reduction, transforming ESG and supplier performance across our E2E supply chain. ESG performance is critical to our company goals including Carbon Scope 3 and Responsible Sourcing. Key Accountabilities Strategy and Vision

  • Provide functional and business thought leadership to mature the Logistics Procurement capability alongside the Group Head of Logistics Operations. This includes bringing logistics procurement, operations and commercial business teams together to find pragmatic solutions to the most critical opportunities.
  • Develop and implement, alongside Group and Divisional colleagues, credible 1-3 year supplier category strategies, supported by execution roadmaps to deliver this strategy with short, medium and long term initiatives.
  • Develop long-term, leading edge, integrated category strategies that drive holistic supplier performance. These strategies should have value creation across multiple dimensions at their heart, including cost, top line performance and sustainability (ESG) leadership.
  • Markets and Risk
  • Actively understanding and responding to market intelligence and economic fundamentals to leverage the best time to go to market for optimal supplier pricing and value.
  • Delivering supplier strategies which actively anticipate and reduce supplier risk (eg sole supplier risk) and secure competitive supply in times of contrained markets or supply shortages.
  • Partner with the Head of Energy (including fuel hegding), to support the operational management of commodity hedging to reduce exposure to price volatility.
  • Contracting
  • Ensuring appropriate Supplier contracting strategies are in place to mitigate legal and regulatory exposure, including in the event of supplier failure to perform. Ensure relevant Supplier KPIs are included in logistics contracts in support of business requirements.
  • Work closely with Commercial and Legal teams across the business to deliver commercial and contractual solutions for Logistics operations within the region (including the creation and management of contracting templates).
  • Ensure the financial aspects and impact of any contract are clear to all parties. Negotiating and agreeing contracts and monitoring their progress - checking the quality of service provided and supporting escalation if required
  • Initative Management
  • Lead the delivery of Logistics procurement initiatives, these projects could apply a variety of strategies and levers including; tendering, e-auctions and cost negotiations, price benchmarking, supplier consolidation and rationalization (eg 2PL, 3PL etc), make vs buy or lease (eg warehousing, transport), price negotiations to support network changes and growth, partnering with other businesses on last mile delivery etc
  • Management of large scale supplier market tender approaches end to end, with Divisions and Sites.
  • Development tendering capability within the business overall by innovative development of tools, workflows, analytics, approaches, and technology to increase the value delivered and the productivity of commercial procurement as a whole.
  • Lead sharing and implementing Logistics procurement best practice across Divisions and regions.
  • Supplier Relationship and Peformance Management
  • Ensure relevant Supplier Performance Management processes are in place, in accordance with ISO requirements, driving continuous improvement initiatives with suppliers. Ensure supplier reviews are conducted at appropriate frequencies - eg quarterly, monthly etc, as agreed with stakeholders.
  • Ensure a clear framework is in place with regions and sites for roles and responsibilities for managing Supplier Performance Management activities.
  • Partner with stakeholders to ensure Supplier's are segmented, to ensure that Strategic suppliers have top top meetings in place and relationshsip management strategies and governance models are in place.
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Build relationships across the procurement community, in addition to operational country, cluster, regional, divisional and cross functional stakeholders. This should involve striking the balance of challenge and support of these stakeholders. Key stakeholders are : Head of Logistics Operations, Heads of Procurement, Head of Divisional Supply Chain, Regional Head of SC, Sub Regional Head of Logistics.
  • Ability to engage with a range of stakeholders from Site SC Manager to Senior Operations Leaders critical.
  • Represent the Logistics Function on Procurement topics in cross functional Group and Divisional Initiatives.
  • Health & Safety
  • To be accountable for Health & Safety (H&S) within team, operating in line with company procedures to enable a safe working environment.
  • To ensure H&S clauses are in supplier contracts and to manage supplier non compliance issues or breaches.

    A strong knowledge and demonstrated experience of senior leadership roles in Logistics Procurement covering the following functional areas : Warehousing, Road Transportation (FTL & LTL), Multi-modal Protransportation, Logistics Planning and Execution, 3PL and Freight
  • Forwarder management, Pallet management & Logistics Sourcing and Procurement.
  • Experience of leading transformational change in Supply Chain in a matrix environment

  • Communication and Influencing : Ability to build strong trusting relationships with cross functional and cross geographical stakeholders in an ambiguous and complex matrix. Use these relationships to support and challenge these stakeholders.
  • Other Skills and Competencies
  • Fluency in English. Fluency in another European language in Europe where DS Smith has a presence would be an advantage.
  • Desirable Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree level or equivalent by experience. Bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, or related field valuable.
  • Deep knowledge and experience in logistics procurement : Minimum 10 years experience in Logistics Procurement management roles, including working in a business with mature E2E Supply Chain and Procurement capability.
  • Experience in developing and successfully implementing 1-3 year regional and global procurement strategies.
  • Extensive experience in implementing and managing a range of complex global and regional logistics procurement sourcing and contracting negotiations.
  • Demonstrable track record in influencing in a matrix environment.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills.
  • Leadership skills with proven track record to convince others through written and spoken communications. Able to deal with resistance.
  • Exceptional knowledge of Best-in-Class Procurement practices and ways of working.
  • An individual with the broad business acumen and an ability to interact with general management at a senior level is critical.
  • A management style and approach that puts diversity and inclusion at the heart of all interactions.
  • Master negotiator, capable of delivering great outcomes when leading high value and complex deals.
