Full Job Description

  • Ensuring the Department is ready to respond to incidents, both here and overseas, which could have an impact on the transport sector. Enhancing TSOC's reputation as a centre of excellence for crisis management.
  • Developing and maintaining a six-month horizon scanning capability, working with colleagues across Whitehall, to identify incidents that could affect transport.
  • Managing the co-ordination of the Department's response to major transport incidents with significant cross-modal, cross-sector and/or widespread geographical impacts and high reputational risk exposure
  • Supporting Ministers at COBR and other crisis response forums.
  • Oversee the Department's intelligence function, supporting security and resilience teams with accessing the information and stakeholders they need.
  • Regular out of hours working in response to emerging and live incidents.
  • The post has a high degree of autonomy, and the holder must be comfortable operating within a broad strategic direction in pursuit of continuously improving response performance.

Have you got experience of working as a security, response or resilience policy professional?
  • Do you have strong personal resilience with the ability to work under pressure whilst supporting senior officials? Can you effectively manage competing priorities? If so, we'd love to hear from you! This is an exciting, high profile leadership role which plays a key part in supporting national security priorities and delivering response functions within the Department for Transport. The role would suit someone who is resilient, likes change and working under time pressure, and who is able to grasp complex and dynamic issues quickly to understand what really matters from a transport perspective. The successful candidate will be the 'face' of incident management, needing to be calm under pressure and able to lead the response and intelligence teams to prepare for and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. We are not always in crisis mode, and much of this role is about making sure the Department is prepared for exceptional events and improving our capability and service delivery while keeping up the momentum of our business-as-usual work. This includes training and planning for both "rising tide" and no-notice events such as terror attacks, industrial action, severe weather events and insolvencies. As you will own the departments intelligence reporting and high security facility capabilities, the post is only open to UK nationals.
