Full Job Description

This Junior Power System Engineer will report to the the Regional Development Manager and will work within the DSO directorate based in our London office. You will be a permanent employee., Working within a team of engineers and contract managers, you will perform power system studies necessary to facilitate Distributed Energy Resources Management System (DERMS) flexible connections and the preparation of technical information used in modification applications to the National Energy System Operator (NESO). You will learn from the experienced team members whilst going through a development plan to equip you with the requisite competencies to become a Power System Engineer. We expect that the applicant will hold a degree in an engineering related discipline and have the ambition and drive to become a chartered engineer. Principal internal interfaces include Network Planning, Major Connections, and Finance. Important external interfaces are NESO, National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) and other Distribution Network Operators (DNO) Where required you will work across all Power Systems activities. Principal Accountabilities Your role will involve cooperative working in a multi-discipline team environment with all partners and focusses on the following areas:

  • Perform power system studies and network analysis using PowerFactory to prepare technical information required for modification applications to NESO.
  • Manage the Bilateral Connection Agreement (BCA) Appendix G process between UK Power Networks and NESO, including monthly updates on the status of the connected and contracted DER pipeline.
  • Perform DERMS flexible connection curtailment assessments using PowerFactory.
  • Contribute to whole system projects, including Regional Development Programmes (RDPs) across all UK Power Network Licence areas.
  • Support Contract Managers with the technical aspects related to the management of the DSO/NESO interface.
  • Support other areas to ensure the whole DSO team meets its objectives.
  • Nature and Scope Due to the rapid uptake of renewable generation, electricity storage and electric vehicles, electricity networks are seeing their biggest transformation since its beginnings and the DSO team is at the heart of it. High volumes of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) triggering network reinforcement were traditionally managed by solely upgrading the network infrastructure to increase network capacity. The DSO team is responsible for forecasting load-related capacity needs on the network, assessing asset and flexibility solutions, developing solutions to accelerate connections for customers and regional coordination with NESO and National Grid. You will be part of this team, and through your development programme you will support and lead a variety of projects to ensure UK Power Networks delivers value for our customers. The focus of your role will be in DSO/NESO interface, carrying out power system studies and preparing technical information used in modification applications to NESO and managing regular updates to the NESO on the connected and contracted DER pipeline. You will be skilled at developing collaborative relationships with a range of people.

  • Enthusiastic and customer focused, without losing sight of safety and security of supply goals., Degree in engineering or other quantitative discipline, preferably with an understanding of the principles of electrical power system engineering, An understanding of the design and operational characteristics of GB distribution and transmission networks.
  • Practical experience of power system modelling packages, ideally PowerFactory.
  • Awareness of the smart solutions and new technologies that can be deployed on the distribution network in relation to the impacts that the connection of Distributed Energy Resources have on the distribution network.
  • Experience in data analytics, with data and statistical analysis skills.
  • Experience in scripting using programming languages such as Python or DPL.
  • Awareness of the Distribution Code, Grid Code and the Connection and Use of System Code (CUSC).

    You will attract a salary of £51,245.00 and a bonus of 3%. This role can also offer blended working after probationary period (6 months) - 3 days in the office and 2 remote
