Full Job Description

Applications are invited to apply for a locum appointment to Consultant Cardiologist, Cardiologist with a focus on General Cardiology. Applicants with specialist interests in other elements of the cardiology service will be welcome to apply. This post holder will flexibly deliver 7 PAs of General Cardiology outpatient and General/Specialty Cardiology triage, with up to 1.5 PAs negotiable for other specialist interests, if mutually agreed. The department utilises modern practices of remote A& G, triage, and virtual clinics, as well as traditional face to face models of outpatient care. The post will be based at Leeds General Infirmary. The purpose of this appointment is to sustain clinical activity and recover backlog following the sudden and unexpected death of a colleague, in advance of more long-term strategic developments to provide this activity. Our 15k staff ensures that every year we treat 1,5m people in our 2,000 beds or out-patient settings, comprising 100,000-day cases, 125,000 in-patients, 200k A& E visits and 1m out-patient appointments. We operate from 7 hospitals on 5 sites, all linked by the same vision, philosophy, and culture to be the best for specialist and integrated care. Main duties of the job This appointment will be based at the Leeds General Infirmary, one of the largest and most modern tertiary cardiac centres in the UK, serving a population of over 3 million. There are 6 state of the art Cardiac Catheter laboratories, with over 2000 PCIs, including 24/7 primary PCI, over 900 invasive electrophysiology/cardiac ablations and in excess of 700 implantable device procedures per annum, making the West Yorkshire Heart Centre one of the highest volume units in the UK. The Valve clinic and interventional TAVI service is the largest in the UK outside of London. In addition, ICC, advanced imaging, cardiac MRI, adult congenital cardiology, paediatric cardiology and interventional paediatric cardiology, as well as adult and paediatric cardiac surgical services, all complement each other within the same site. The department consists of 2 inpatient wards (one acute admissions cardiology ward), a day case interventional ward, a day case seated suite, 6 lab catheter suite and a 10 bed CCU. The post is fixed term for 6 months starting as soon as possible, with options to extend if mutually agreed., Objectives of the post To deliver care to patients by providing: Out-patient clinics (general cardiology) Triage and A& G activity Contributions to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings To link with consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Cardiology department and across the Cardio-Respiratory CSU. To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Cardiology department. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department. Current Situation There are currently 27 consultant cardiologists working part or full-time at Leeds. All consultants are based at the Leeds General Infirmary site. There are 5 consultants working in the Valve team, 6 in the PCI team, 5 in the Heart Failure team, and 5 in the Imaging team. There are 6 Electrophysiology consultants, two who perform lead extraction, and 6 Cardiac Surgeons.

  • CCT (or within 6 months of) in Cardiology or equivalent qualification
  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent qualification
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Experience Essential
  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Cardiology.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Cardiology.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors
  • Well organised and skilled in good time management
  • Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.

  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff
