Full Job Description

Applications are invited for a fixed term Consultant Paediatric and Perinatal Pathologist to join our Cellular Pathology department. The post is a (whole) full time Consultant post with 10 programmed activities (PAs) and the post holder will be based at St. George's Hospital. The post will include perinatal post-mortem (autopsy) pathology, placental pathology and routine paediatric surgical pathology. This is a combination of a replacement post due to reconfiguration of current consultant programmed activities working less than full time and increased demand related to service expansion. The appointee is expected to have had specialist training in paediatric and perinatal pathology and to have passed the Final Paediatric Pathology Fellowship Exam of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent., The appointee, together with consultant colleagues in the Department, will be responsible for the provision of the paediatric and perinatal pathology reporting service. This will include:

  • Participation in the perinatal and hospital consented paediatric post-mortem service.
  • Reporting placentas.
  • Reporting routine paediatric surgical pathology.
  • Involvement in relevant clinicopathological meetings and MDTs.
  • Contribution to the training and supervision of junior medical staff

The Cellular Pathology department at St George's Hospital is the hub for the South West London Pathology Service. This incorporates diagnostic cytology and histopathology from Croydon University Hospital and St George's Hospital and histopathology from Queen Mary's Hospital Roehampton. This is a busy department and is a friendly and supportive environment in which to develop specialist expertise.
  • In 2014 St George's linked with an adjacent hospital to form a 'hub-and-spoke' model for delivery of Pathology Services in South West London. Known as 'South West London Pathology' (SWLP), the Hub is located at St George's and has a separate management structure from that of St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. SWLP provides diagnostic cytology and histopathology services for St George's and Croydon University Hospitals. As a result, the yearly cytopathology and histopathology workloads in 2019 were 5700 and 56000 respectively (the latter including paediatric biopsies and resections and placentas). The specialist reporting service is currently being delivered by 27 WTE consultants. A hospital post-mortem service is supported by consultants attached to the cellular pathology department, although the mortuary itself is not part of the governance structure of SWLP.
